The Bears have their new lead backfield man.
Bears general manager Ryan Pace is never one to shy away from getting his man. After a trade up with the New England Patriots to No. 73 overall, the Bears selected former Iowa State standout running back David Montgomery. Montgomery joins a budding Bears offense that needed one final backfield piece to put them over the top. Theoretically, Montgomery and all of his complete stature should be a perfect fit for that mission.
A two-year starter for the Cyclones, Montgomery rushed for over 2,300 yards and 24 touchdowns over the last two seasons. He’s a patient runner with great balance that should flourish in a nuanced offense like the Bears have. A two-time First-Team All-Big 12 selection, Montgomery is also an adept receiver out of the backfield — something the Bears were looking for after trading Jordan Howard.
The only questions now are proving whether the Bears and Nagy can make a back-by-committee work with Montgomery, Tarik Cohen, and new free agent signing Mike Davis. There’s no denying Montgomery’s well-rounded talent. Now the ball just has to be spread around well. That and whether trading up for a running back in a draft where you have limited resources is worth it.
A Super Bowl and ensuing window could depend on it.
