Luis Perez, Eagles reportedly agree to contract

Philly has a new QB.

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing former Alliance of American Football quarterback Luis Perez to a one-year contract, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Caplan. It was previously reported that the Eagles were hosting Perez in Philly for a workout.

This is an interesting signing for the Eagles because Perez didn’t exactly light it up the AAF; he actually got benched at one point. In eight starts for the Birmingham Iron, Perez completed just 52.3% of his attempts for 1,465 yards (5.6 yards per attempt), five touchdowns, six interceptions, and a 65.9 passer rating. He rushed 24 times for 75 yards.

Despite poor production, the Eagles clearly saw something in the 24-year-old Perez that they liked. Perhaps it was his maturity:

The Eagles must feel like the 6-3, 222 pound Perez has some tools worth developing. It’s worth noting that he is pretty raw considering he didn’t really play high school football and he only played at the Division II level in college. Some actual NFL coaching could do him good.

The Perez signing means the Eagles now have three quarterbacks on their roster. Carson Wentz is the obvious starter. Nate Sudfeld is expected to be his primary backup, especially with the Eagles passing on signing an established veteran to replace Nick Foles. Perez comes to Philly with an opportunity to compete with Sudfeld but more likely end up as the No. 3 quarterback ... whether that’s on the 53-man roster or the practice squad. It’s possible Perez just ends up being a camp arm — this year’s Joe Callahan.

Signing Perez doesn’t necessarily prevent the Eagles from selecting a developmental quarterback on Day 3 of the 2019 NFL Draft. For now, though, Perez appears to be the project the Eagles are interested in working on.
