An Article a Day of the CBA: Article 1 Definitions

NFLPA Player Representative for the Seattle Seahawks, Doug Baldwin

The Seattle Seahawks closed out their rookie minicamp on Sunday, and while there is still a good amount of offseason work for players between now and the final organized team activity on June 13, things are about to get very slow. The summer doldrums of June and early July are the slowest time of the year for the NFL news cycle, but starting today Field Gulls will be filling the time between now and training camp by working through the details of the NFL collective bargaining agreement one article at a time.

Some of the articles looked at will be somewhat interesting, and some will be boring. In any case, the purpose of this series is to allows fans who are interested in better understanding the workings of the CBA and how specifically it lays out the rules that govern the NFL.

This first article of the agreement is one of the most basic, and those in the legal profession, or who regularly work with documents several hundred pages long, will be more than familiar with definitions lists. Contracts will typically have a section that sets forth the specific definitions of the terms that will be commonly used throughout the document, or documents as the case may be, and the CBA is no different.

Starting with “Accrued Season” and working alphabetically through to “Veteran”, the definitions portion of the CBA does nothing more than define exactly what each of dozens of terms used repeatedly mean. Nothing flashy, and nothing truly exciting, but as we’ll be going through each article one at a time, that means I can’t leave out Article 1. The articles covered in the coming days are likely to be of far more interest, as they’ll touch on the details of why the league was able to penalize teams for attempting to take advantage of the uncapped 2010 season to clear the books and clean up their salary cap situation, so be sure to come back.

As I start working on this, if there are items of specific interest to any readers, please feel free to leave a note in the comments section so that I can address those questions in detail when I make my way to the relevant section.
