Denver should keep an eye on the nose tackle market in final wave of free agency

Benjamin Allbright gives a few names of interior defensive linemen at whom Denver could be looking.

The final wave of free agency begins. As of today, any players signed on the open market no longer count towards the compensatory pick formula, so we could potentially see some of the free agents still left on the market getting snatched up.

NFL Insider, Benjamin Allbright joined 1st & 10 at 10 on Orange and Blue 760 today to discuss likely landing spots for some of the top free agents and if Denver could look to sign any of them.

Allbright mentioned nose tackle as the primary position that Denver could look to sign in this final wave of free agency heading into camp. His list overlaps with some of the names our Joe Rowles talked about a few days ago.

He mentioned Muhammad Wilkerson as a potential option on the defensive interior. Wilkerson is probably the most talented out of the group, but isn’t a perfect fit as a true nose tackle, although he can play all over the defensive interior. The biggest issue is likely price as Allbright mentions Wilkerson is probably not in Denver’s range.

The other two names more likely to be in Denver’s price are Domata Peko and Corey Liuget. Peko is one that we have talked about several times on the site and makes a lot of sense if Denver is looking for someone to play limited snaps in base packages and short yardage.

Liuget is an interesting name as he is only 28 years old and has been a solid player for the Chargers throughout his career. Liuget didn’t play much last year as he sat out the first four games with a PED violation, and then suffered a season ending quad tear a few weeks later. His contract option was not picked up by the Chargers this offseason making him a free agent.

My gut says we’ll see Peko back on a one-year deal before camp, but we’ll have to see how this last wave of free agency plays out over the next few weeks.
