Arizona Cardinals announce signing of first overall pick, Kyler Murray

The Arizona Cardinals announced that they have come to terms with first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Kyler Murray.

The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has signed Oklahoma quarterback KYLER MURRAY, the team’s first-round (1st overall) selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, to a four-year contract with a team option for a fifth.

Murray (5-10, 207) played in 29 games (17 starts) in his college career and completed 350-of-519 passes (67.4%) for 5,406 yards, 50 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while also rushing for 1,478 yards and 13 touchdowns on 207 carries (7.1 avg.). A first-team All-American as a junior in 2018 at Oklahoma, Murray won the Heisman Trophy, was named the Associated Press Player of the Year and earned Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Year, Manning Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Award honors after completing 260-of-377 passes (68.9%) for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,001 yards and 11 touchdowns to join Clemson’s Deshaun Watson (2015) as the only FBS players to ever record at least 4,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a season. Murray became first FBS player to average at least 300.0 passing yards (311.5) and at least 70.0 rushing yards (71.5) per game for a full season.

Obviously the contracts are set, so Murray is set to make $35,158,645 over his four years, with $23,589,924 of that being in signing bonus fashion.

These numbers, from Joel Corry, are a stark contrast from what Murray would have made under the old labor agreement.

According to Corry:

A six-year contract with a base value in excess of $140 million with more than $90 million fully guaranteed is probably what Kyler Murray would have been expecting from the Cardinals as the first overall pick had the old system remained intact, given how rookie contracts at the top of the draft were escalating. The maximum value for Murray’s six years could have been as much as $160 million. Murray’s actual signing bonus will be comparable to what his average yearly salary likely would have been under the old system.

Of course, if Murray is what the Cardinals believe he can be, he’ll be signing that type of deal in three years anyways.

Welcome, officially to the desert and the Arizona Cardinals, Kyler Murray.
