With time winding down, it’s best for the Bucs and Gerald McCoy to have a deadline set on decision
This has dragged on long enough. The “will he won’t he” saga and drama surrounding Gerald McCoy and his future with the Buccaneers has reached its peak and it’s time to put an end to it.
Yet. things seem cloud as ever.
You have the speculation that he won’t be with the team thanks in large part to his $13-million dollar salary in 2019 combined with his apparent decision to skip all the voluntary team work outs. Something McCoy hasn’t done since joining the Bucs.
Then the speculation that he will stay following the unfortunate Jason Pierre-Paul accident and Bruce Arians saying on SiriusXM Radio that McCoy will play 3-technique in the Bucs’ defense.
Things are no clearer now than they were months ago and it’s time to stop.
From the outside looking in, this relationship appears to have become very toxic to the point of being irreparable. I personally don’t see how the relationship can mend and allow the two sides to flourish on or off the field. But it doesn’t matter what I think, it doesn’t matter what you think. Honestly, it doesn’t really matter what McCoy thinks. It’s up to the Bucs and the coaching staff.
McCoy and the Bucs have done a lot for one another. Despite how the relationship is at this moment, the two sides surely share a mutual respect of one another and that means they should do what’s best for themselves as well as each other.
With mandatory mini-camp beginning next week, a final decision - one way or another - needs to be made before then. If the Bucs are to move on, it’s unfair to McCoy to force him to show up and work with a team he won’t be a part of or fine him if he doesn’t show up. Not to mention, it’s unfair to give him reps that will need to go to whatever player is replacing him.
If McCoy is indeed going to be part of this team for 2019, the team needs to come out and officially say so. Stop leaving it up to assumptions and speculations and just put the whole thing to rest.
Whatever the decision is, just make it and move on. The Bucs have to finish signing their draft class and don’t have the money to do so, so moves need to be made. If that move is McCoy, make it. If there are alternate avenues, explore those and get it done. Whether it’s Gerald or other players, they need the opportunity to move on and get on a roster that will use them for the upcoming year.
Enough is enough. Just decide and do it.
