Derrick Johnson to sign one-day contract to retire a Chief, according to a new report

Like Jamaal Charles, Johnson will sign a one-day contract to retire a Chief, per 610 Sports Radio.

Don’t adjust your computer screen, cell phone or whatever it is you use to access Arrowhead Pride. For the second day in a row, it looks like a former Kansas City Chiefs great has agreed to sign a one-day contract to retire with the club.

This time it is Derrick Johnson, according to 610 Sports Radio, who will follow in the footsteps of running back Jamaal Charles, who signed his one-day contract on Wednesday.

Johnson, 36, is the franchise’s leading tackler with 1,151 tackles in 13 years as a Chief. The Chiefs drafted Johnson 15th overall with their first-round pick back in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Johnson’s Chiefs career came to an end when the team let him walk in free agency back in February of 2018. Johnson wanted to stay in Kansas City and was willing to do so at a discount, but the Chiefs, as Johnson put it, had their mind made up.

Johnson found a temporary home with the Oakland Raiders, but the team released him last October after just six games and one start.

Chiefs fans wondered if the team would bring Johnson back into the mix, but Andy Reid quickly shut the idea down. Reid said last February that he would potentially welcome Johnson back to the Chiefs in a coaching position some day.

“I thought about all of it,” Johnson explained of coaching, via Chiefs.com, back in 2017. “In high school, you’re teaching the fundamentals, trying to get them off to college. It’s also teaching them a little bit about life.

“In college, there’s the recruiting part of it, so it’s a year-around thing. In the NFL, it’s even more of a business—as far as getting hired and fired. I’ll defenitely get into the coaching later on, not right when I get out, but I’ll set it up in the right way.”

Perhaps we will see the Chiefs legend working with the team in some capacity later this summer at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri. As for now, it seems safe to break out those No. 56 jerseys once again.
