Now that the deadline has passed where any players added via free agency do not count against the compensatory pick structure, the Redskins should be busy on the phones.
Some may think that the team lacks the salary cap room to do much more this offseason, but space CAN be made, and making that space makes a lot of sense in certain situations.
Cuts:
Vernon Davis: $5 million savings
Mason Foster: $4 million savings
Colt McCoy: $3.375 million savings(injury settlement)
Getting an extension done with Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff could free up another few million in cap space.
Five players the Redskins should call:
Tre Boston(FS): Boston, who won’t turn 27 until June, should be at the very top of the priority list. He’s a true free safety who has eight interceptions and 158 combined tackles in his last two seasons while playing on one year prove-it deals for two different teams. I think he’s “proved it”.
Dion Sims(TE): Sims is a 6’5” 265 pound tight end who can run. He’s only 28 years old, and has starting experience as an in-line tight end in the league. He’s not going to lead the NFL in receptions, but he’s reliable, durable and a good blocker.
Shane Ray(EDGE): I was surprised no one signed Ray during the first wave of free agency. He’s battled some injuries early in his career, but he’s shown he has the ability to get after the passer when he’s on the field. He offers speed off the edge - something the Redskins can use more of even after drafting Montez Sweat in round one of the 2019 NFL draft. He could be a nice rotational piece on the Redskins defense.
Kelvin Benjamin(WR/TE): Now hear me out on this one...
Benjamin had some early success when he first broke into the league with the Panthers as a wide receiver. He’s since flopped with both the Bills and Chiefs, and part of that is due to his weight.
...my idea - make him a move TE! Let him play at 245-250 pounds and use that big body, speed and catch radius to dominate smaller safeties and linebackers from the slot. Move TE’s are all the craze in today’s NFL, and I think Benjamin could re-invent himself in this role.

Martavis Bryant(WR): Bryant has had off-field issues that have stunted his career, including a year-long suspension for violating the league’s Substance Abuse policy in 2016 and a rant that went public on social media while in Pittsburgh over how he was being used in their offense. He was never one of Big Ben’s “chosen children”, and was eventually traded to the Raiders. He was suspended indefinitely in 2018 for violating conditions of his reinstatement. Bryant is currently suspended but is set to apply for reinstatement very soon.
If he is reinstated, he offers tremendous speed and athleticism on the outside, and at just 27, has quality years ahead of him. The Redskins could use his talent as their X wide receiver.
