Horse Tracks: Casey Kreiter impresses at Broncos mini camp.

If there was competition at long snapper, it’d already be over.

When it comes to the 2019 season, there isn’t an unimportant position on the roster... Just one that few people talk about in May. With all the intrigue at corner, quarterback, wide receiver, and elsewhere, Broncos Country can rest easy when it comes to the anchor of the special teams unit, long snapper.

At Sunday’s press conference, special teams coordinator Tom McMahon made no waves and caught the attention of probably just me when he mentioned Casey Kreiter and said stuff about him.

“I’ll start with for me to work with, I love working with him because everything you ask him to do he tries to do it. He doesn’t take anything personal. Most people you try to correct them, they’ll try to hold onto something. He’s done every single thing I’ve asked him. In the room, he’s a great leader. What he does is go out on the practice field and performs. He doesn’t use his mouth a lot. He just goes out and performs.”

A Bronco since joining the team in 2016, Kreiter has performed so well, he made the pro bowl in 2019. One wonders just what McMahon is asking him to do. What could possibly be said to the long snapper that could be taken personally? Really, who berates a long snapper? How does an emotionally wounded long snapper behave? I have so many follow-up questions.

If I were Kreiter, I would take it personally that the only photo of myself in the Getty images library is one of him from 2016 standing next to camp-arm Mark Sanchez. In almost four years, they couldn’t get another picture?

All tongue-in-cheek joking aside, let’s not lose sight of McMahon’s final words on Kreiter. “He just goes out and performs.” It’s true. Kreiter has been so consistent and capable at his job that nobody notices and not noticing your long snapper is indicative of a job very well done. You think it’s silly to dedicate a whole article the long snapper in May? Truth be told, I couldn’t do what he does and neither could you. Cheers to you Casey! Keep up the good work!
