No, he doesn’t have tattoos on his face or a tiger n his living room (as far as we know). The Green Bay Packers have acquired Mike Tyson — an NFL safety, not the legendary boxer — according to Monday’s NFL transaction wire.
Tyson, a former sixth-round draft pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2017, is headed to Green Bay. The Packers claimed him on waivers Monday following his release from the Houston Texans on Friday. Tyson will join a group of young Packers safeties fighting for special teams reps and a backup role behind presumed starters Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage, Jr.
The Packers waived undrafted rookie receiver Matthew Eaton in order to make room for Tyson on the 90-man roster.
Tyson spent nearly his entire rookie season on Seattle’s practice squad, earning a late-season call-up to the 53-man roster. However, he did not play in a game for Seattle, and despite sticking with the team through last year’s offseason and training camp, he was released at final cuts. The Texans then scooped him up for their practice squad to start the 2018 regular season, and he got another call-up to the active roster, this time in October. After that, Tyson played in ten games with two starts, recording five total tackles and one pass breakup.
At the University of Cincinnati, Tyson was a three-year starter whose ball skills exploded in his senior year. Despite just two interceptions through three seasons — both as a freshman — Tyson picked off five passes in his final season to go along with 4.5 tackles for loss. At the 2017 NFL Combine, Tyson measured in at 6-foot-1 and 204 pounds, running the 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds. He then reportedly had agility times of 7.14 seconds in the 3-cone drill and 4.26 seconds in the short shuttle at the Bearcats’ Pro Day.
