Projected rookie roles for the 2019 Jets Draft class

Now that the Draft is over where can we expect to see the Jets’ rookie class playing on Sundays this fall?

Quinnen Williams, Projected Role: Starting Interior Defensive Linemen

I am not going to pigeonhole Williams into one position because I presume he will move up and down the line depending on the situation. He should be penciled into a starting role on the defensive line, however. That is not a very bold statement for a third overall pick. The Jets are going to be looking for impact from the rookie

Jachai Polite, Projected Role: Situational Pass Rusher

The label is a bit of a misnomer. The NFL has become such a passing league that situational pass rushers can see the field on over 50% of the snaps. I would expect that to be the case for Polite. He might sit on early downs and run situations, but when the other team has to throw the Jets will put him out there hoping he will make plays off the edge.

Chuma Udoga, Projected Role: Developmental Tackle Buried Deep on Depth Chart

I would be surprised if we saw Udoga hit the field much this season. His rookie year will likely be focused on development on the practice field. It is conceivable he takes the swing tackle job, but the Jets have oddly been satisfied enough with Brent Qvale to bring him back year after year.

Trevon Wesco, Projected Role: Fullback and Second Tight End Specializing in Blocking

Wesco probably won’t see much playing time. Le’Veon Bell, Chris Herndon, Robby Anderson, Quincy Enuwna, and Jamison Crowder are the skill players who will spend most of the time on the field. Wesco will likely play situationally when the team wants to use heavy personnel. I presume he will be utilized primarily as a blocker and line up both in-line and as a fullback similarly to how the Jets used Eric Tomlinson last year.

Blake Cashman, Projected Role: Backup Linebacker and Special Teamer

Cashman will only get playing time on defense if one of the starting linebackers is unavailable, but I think he stands a good chance to be on the active 46 each week as a contributor on special teams.

Blessaun Austin, Projected Role: Recovering on PUP/IR

Austin was a long-term investment who probably won’t see the field this season. His focus will be rehabbing and recovering from his second serious injury in as many years.
