Read up on the newest Bills.
The Buffalo Bills announced the first round of undrafted free-agent signings following the 2019 NFL Draft. Ahead of rookie minicamp, Buffalo inked eight UDFAs but still has three spots left on their 90-man roster and a slew of rookies coming in for a tryout this weekend.
Here are some short scouting reports on all the signed players.
LB Tyrel Dodson, Texas A&M
Poor measurables and instincts; he does have the speed you want in a linebacker prospect. May be best suited to an outside linebacker roll where he is free of blockers and able to punish runners in space.
WR Nick Easley, Iowa
Only 5’11”, Easley was purportedly quick enough at his pro day to earn a position in the slot. Iowa doesn’t field the most prolific passing offense, but he came down with 52 catches last season to lead the team.
LB Juwan Foggie, Charlotte
A late convert to the linebacker position, Foggie was originally a wide receiver, so you know he has good speed for the position. Took well to the position change, but has only spent two years as a linebacker.
OL Blake Hance, Northwestern
An experienced four-year starter along the offensive line for Northwestern. Has the size you want, but never really became a solid tackle in college. Could be worth a look inside, as he paved the way for two very productive running backs during his time.
QB Tyree Jackson, Buffalo
A prototype quarterback, Jackson is knocked for his polish but there are things to like about his game in addition to his size and arm. His pocket work and his ability to improvise, in particular, was better than many prospects at the position this year.
CB Cam Lewis, Buffalo
Was a starting outside cornerback with the Bulls this past season, managing to show off his ball skills by coming down with three key interceptions. Has decent speed and size for the position, but could be asked to move inside.
K Chase McLaughlin, Illinois
Never missed an extra point in his career and was 4-of-6 from beyond 50 yards out during his senior season. Made 20 field goals in 2018, and was ranked second in the country in 50+ yard makes. Seems to have a big enough leg.
WR David Sills V, West Virginia
Came late to the position as a former quarterback recruit, but quickly put up big numbers at WVU with Will Grier. Poor athlete, but has some ability to high-jump passes. Was deadly in the red zone in college.
With the retirement of Derek Anderson, Jackson certainly has a path to the Bills’ opening day roster. Buffalo kept just two quarterbacks the last two cut-down days, though. In 2017 it was Tyrod Taylor and Nathan Peterman with Joe Webb meeting with special teams and wide receivers more than QBs. In 2018, Peterman and rookie Josh Allen were all who were left after the trade of AJ McCarron.
Sills also has a great shot for the roster, considering the question marks at wide receiver in Buffalo. They presumably have at least one wide-open roster spot for the position where he’ll be competing with Isaiah McKenzie, Ray-Ray McCloud III, Duke Williams, and a couple other players who were on Buffalo’s roster a year ago at various points in time.
McLaughlin is another player who could crack the roster, as kicker Stephen Hauschka was not good as the season progressed following an injury. If he’s healthy and back to his old form, they won’t move on from him. If he’s not, the big-legged kicker from Illinois has a strong shot.
Last year, only Robert Foster made the opening-day roster as a UDFA but Cam Phillips replaced him before they were swapped back. Cornerback Levi Wallace was added after the Vontae Davis fiasco and became the starting cornerback almost immediately.
