Our Laurie Lattimore-Volkmann wrote up some of his better ones a few days ago when Manning made an appearance at the Denver Broncos facility for organized team activities. If you haven’t read it, you should.
I want to revisit one line in particular from Manning’s media scrum when he was talking about Vic Fangio and their experience working together when they were with the Indianapolis Colts and the impact Fangio could have in Denver.
“He hasn’t changed one bit since 1999 in Indianapolis,” Manning told the media about. “That’s what John saw — ‘This guy’s a football coach, and we need to get back to playing solid fundamental football around here.’ That’s what wins games and that’s been the core of what the Broncos have been about, and I think Vic will bring that to Denver.”
Call me a punch-drunk fan, but to hear Manning refer to the Broncos as a “we,” even after his retirement, is not a small thing. Actually it’s a helluva thing. As I said when he retired, no one knew what to expect when he signed in Denver. But the ride Manning took all of Broncos Country on in his four years remains one of the most surreal times in the franchise’s history. His signing. His introductory news conference. His first game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. His historic offensive season. His riding off into the sunset as a Super Bowl champion. All of it is still surreal.
So to hear Manning refer to the Broncos as a “we,” even in retirement, keeps that sentiment alive.
Why isn’t Steve Foley in the Ring of Fame Part II?
Last week in this space, I asked that question and was appreciative of the responses — for and against.
One response in particular stood out, and it’s why I’m revisiting it this week. As I told Adam Malnati on the most recent MHR Radio Podcast (iTunes, Spotify, and Stitcher), I wish I would have known about this quote prior to writing the initial story since I think it solidifies the former Broncos defensive back’s case to get in the Ring of Fame. Still, it allows me to revisit the question and show why this needs to get fixed sooner rather than later.
“It’s like losing a son,” defensive coordinator Joe Collier said when Foley retired from the Broncos. “He was our top interceptor. He’s one of the best players we’ve ever had. He was one of the best pass-defense safeties I’ve ever had. He was one of the smartest players I’ve ever coached.” Collier called Foley the “quarterback of the defense,” and noted that the only losing season Foley saw was when he was injured (1982).
Thanks to BroncosFanForDecades for making the community and myself aware of this quote. As I said last week, whatever the reason Foley is not in the Ring of Fame, it needs to get fixed. The time has come for him to (finally) get inducted.
