More of the latest Browns news and notes from around the web in today’s dose of the Sunday Dawg Chow.
- Odell Beckham, success in America and the right to do it your own way (cleveland.com) - Team sports are a tricky business, supposedly cohesive groups made of elite individuals. Some of those elite individuals are all about the team concept. Wonderful. But mandating that every special talent subscribes to rules put forth by a boss isn’t just foolhardy, it might be contrary to winning.
- Myles Garrett buys new iPhone for man who could not afford one (Fox 8) - Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett almost brought one man to tears after covering the costs of an iPhone for a customer who couldn’t afford to pay.
- Baker Mayfield has been in touch with Gerald McCoy (ohio.com) - Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield said Saturday after the end of the first day of his weekend-long youth football camp at Mayfield High School that he’d been in touch with free-agent defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. “I have been,” he said before turning back to the topic of his camp. Though separated by years, McCoy, like Mayfield, played for the Oklahoma Sooners.
- Baker Mayfield embraces platform as a role model (Browns Zone) - Baker Mayfield hoisted a camper off the ground after a play. He bent down to tie another’s shoe. For Mayfield, the second-year quarterback of the Browns, the focus will shift to mandatory minicamp next week with the final practices before training camp in July. For this weekend, his attention was squarely on the young, sweaty faces having a blast and looking up to their hero.
NFL:
- Mr. Hall of Fame, Joe Horrigan, says goodbye (ESPN) - This June 1 is Joe Horrigan’s last day as the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s executive director, and while he will still work on a project or two for the Hall in the months and years ahead, someone else will occupy his office on the second floor of the Hall’s main building. The Hall’s growing campus now houses 40,000 football “artifacts,” as Horrigan calls them, 6 million photographs and roughly 40 million documents in its collection.
- Saquon on Jones: Wait until ‘he wins two Super Bowls’ (NFL.com) - The New York Giants’ selection of quarterback Daniel Jones early in the 2019 draft surprised many in the football world and unleashed a throng of skeptics hell bent on ridiculing Big Blue for its supposed reach. But through nine days of offseason workouts in East Rutherford, Jones has already won over the people who matter most: his coaches and teammates.
- Calvin Johnson to Detroit Lions: ‘Put that money back in my pocket’ (Free Press) - Rod Wood wants Calvin Johnson back in the Detroit Lions family, and the greatest wide receiver in the organization’s history is open to that idea under one condition. ”They already know what they got to do,” Johnson told the Free Press at the annual camp he runs for local high school students Saturday in metro Detroit. “The only way they’re going to get me back is they put that money back in my pocket. Nah, you don’t do that. I don’t care what they say. They can put it back, then they can have me back. That’s the bottom line.”
