Injury update: Sony Michel reportedly progressing quickly, spending time at TB12

The New England Patriots held four practices this spring that were open to members of the media. One notable player absent from all four of them was running back Sony Michel, who reportedly had to undergo a knee arthroscopy earlier during the offseason. The second-year man missed the final portion of the Patriots’ team workouts because of the procedure, but appears to be well on his way to return for training camp.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Giardi, Michel is “progressing quickly” and has already been “running full tilt” during workout sessions — encouraging signs for a player that missed most of training camp last year due to a knee injury and had to sit out a combined three regular season contests because of issues with his knee. The Georgia product was outstanding when healthy, but his durability was certainly a concern in 2018.

In order to improve his long-term availability heading into the 2019 season, Michel has looked to quarterback Tom Brady and his TB12 Center: the running back reportedly spent considerable time at the workout facility near Gillette Stadium this offseason to improve both the range of motion in his surgically repaired knee and by extension to also become more explosive as a runner this season.

Michel, of course, is not the first Patriot to try to copy Brady’s regimen: tight end Rob Gronkowski and linebacker Dont’a Hightower — two cornerstones of the team’s second dynastic run — both also visited TB12 in the past, as did numerous other players. For Michel individually, a change in workout routine could help him take the famed second-year jump and become even better than he already was during his impressive rookie campaign.
