With the current collect bargaining agreement between the league and players association set to expire after the completion of the 2020, Roger Goodell is once again stating his position on reducing the preseason from its current four-game schedule.
Speaking at Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly’s annual golf tournament, Goodell reiterated his desire to see the league shorten the preseason while adding additional games to the regular season.
“I’m not sure, talking with coaches, that four preseason games is necessary anymore to get ready for a season to evaluate players, develop players,” said Goodell. “There are other ways of doing that, and we’ve had a lot of discussions about that.”
Goodell also mentioned that the two sides have began preliminary talks and called it a “good sign.”
While Goodell may believe adding games to the regular season will make for a better product, players feel differently. They would like to be compensated for a longer regular season and are also concerned about the increased risk of injury that comes with playing in more games.
In addition to reducing the number of preseason games, there are several other big issues that remain on the negotiating table including expanded instant replay and changes to the format of overtime.
