Winslow spent nine days with the Patriots back in 2012.
Former NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II, the son of Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, is facing life in prison after he was found guilty of raping a 58-year-old homeless woman in May of last year. The jury returned the verdict in San Diego’s superior court on Monday, and will continue deliberations on two more counts of rape: one allegedly also happening in 2018 and involving a 54-year-old, and another from 2003 when Winslow was 19.
After a standout career at Miami, Winslow entered the NFL as the sixth overall selection in the 2004 draft. He appeared in only two games over his first two seasons in the league due to injuries, but started to live up to his draft status over the course of the 2006 and 2007 seasons. After another injury-shortened campaign in 2008, the Cleveland Browns opted to trade Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Winslow spent three rather successful seasons with the Bucs: he led the team in catches each year and averaged almost 800 receiving yards per season. Despite that, the club opted to trade him to the Seattle Seahawks during the 2012 offseason. Just three months later, he was off the team again and found his way to the New England Patriots after a two-week stint on the open market.
New England signed Winslow to a one-year contract after Aaron Hernandez had suffered a strained ankle, but he went on to appear in only one game for the club: he was targeted twice in a week three game in Baltimore, and caught one 12-yard pass. Four days later, Winslow asked from his release from the Patriots — reportedly because he was unhappy with how the team used him and his limited playing time.
Winslow went on to spend some time with the New York Jets and tried to revitalize his career in 2016, but he never returned to the NFL. He was arrested on charges of kidnapping and rape in June 2018, and two more cases were brought forward later on. Winslow was found guilty in one of them yesterday, with the other two still being deliberated. Furthermore, the 35-year-old was also found guilty of lewd conduct and indecent exposure involving two other women; he was found not guilty of one count of a lewd act.
All in all, six other felonies and two misdemeanors remain open with the jury in a deadlock as of Monday. If the deadlock cannot be resolved, Winslow is facing eight years in prison for the rape conviction as well as six months each on the two misdemeanors he was so far found guilty of (according to Yahoo! Sports’ Dan Wetzel). If the jury does convict Winslow on the other charges, however, he could very well be sentenced to life imprisonment.
