Redmond is likely to stay on the roster throughout the offseason, and anything beyond that is up in the air.
Alex Redmond has had better offseasons in his football life.
Following his third season in the NFL, and the first one as a starter, the exclusive rights free agent was retained by the Bengals via the minimum tender while the coaches that vouched for him were each relieved of their duties. Since then, things have trended downward for Redmond.
Cincinnati signed former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman John Miller to a three-year deal that has made him the de facto starter at right guard, leaving Redmond’s future very much up in the air. More recently, the NFL announced that Redmond has been suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating their Performance-Enhancing Drug Policy, only clouding that future even more.
Redmond could have very well been out of a job right now, but the Bengals’ new head coach isn’t giving up on him just yet.
When asked about Redmond’s suspension, head coach Zac Taylor expressed blunt support in the 2018 starter.
Asked Zac Taylor about Redmond's suspension and whether he addressed it with him:

"It is what it is. Whatever happens happens, and you own up to it and you just move on. That's the way world works. And we'll keep supporting him and move on."
Redmond is one of the 16 offensive linemen currently on the roster, and one of the seven guards if we’re including Cordy Glenn. Based on how he performed as the starter last season, Taylor was far from forced to bring back Redmond to compete for a roster spot, but did so all the same.
Redmond’s one-year contract isn’t guaranteed and can be cut with no penalty towards the cap, but during offseason programs and training camp and the preseason, he’ll at the very least provide depth and keep others in front of him on the depth chart rested. Despite his poor play when given the opportunity to start, he does provide some value.
Now that Redmond will be unable to play in the first quarter of the season, there’s little reason to believe he’ll make it through final cuts. But for now, based on Taylor’s message, he’s here to stay.
