Mike Tannenbaum feels like Brady had a better year than the league MVP in 2018.
The young guard of NFL quarterbacks was impressive in 2018, with the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes standing above them all: the second-year man was named the league’s most valuable player and led his club to the AFC title game — all while stringing together impressive performances on a regular basis. When all was said and done, however, the oldest quarterback in the business once again reigned supreme.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady helped his club win its sixth Vince Lombardi trophy this century, further cementing his legacy as the greatest of all time. What makes Brady’s accomplishments in 2018 even more impressive is the fact that he did it at an age when most passers are already retired. Despite being 41 years old, the future Hall of Famer still produced a terrific season en route to another championship.
As a result, one former NFL executive would pick Brady’s accomplishments at 41 over Mahomes’ at the age of 23. “For me, it would be Tom Brady,” Mike Tannenbaum said on ESPN recently. “Being in the AFC East for as long as I have, between the Jets and the Dolphins, every year we were like, ‘Wow, this is going to be it for Tom. He’s getting older. This has got to be the year. This has to be the year.’ And it’s remarkable.”
Tannenbaum mentioned that he saw Brady operate first-hand for numerous seasons: he worked for the New York Jets in various roles between 1997 and 2012 — from 2006 to 2012 as the club’s general manager — and for the Miami Dolphins from 2014 through the 2018 season. During Tannenbaum’s time in the Patriots’ division, he saw Brady grow from unheralded day-three draft pick to six-time world champion.
“He’s gotten better. He’s so smart. He knows where he’s going with the ball often before the ball’s ever snapped, so it’s hard to get to him because he gets rid of it so quickly,” Tannenbaum continued his appraisal of Brady’s 2018 season. “It’s really remarkable that he’s actually gotten better in the back half of his career from the first half. Unfortunately, I’ve admired it to my detriment, but he really deserves a lot of credit.”
If Brady can keep up this level of play — and there are no signs so far that he won’t be able to do it — the Patriots will again be in the mix in 2019. Whether Patrick Mahomes at age 24 will be able to defeat the soon-to-be 42-year-old and his team after two losses last season remains to be seen, but the battle(s?) between the young gun and the veteran will again be must-see entertainment.
