San Francisco 49ers links for Monday July 8, 2019
Believe it or not, training camp is just 18 short days away. Which means the news will be picking up soon, and before we know it we’ll be launched headfirst into the abyss of the neverending news cycle of regular season NFL footbal.
But we’re not there yet.
And since we have some time, I’d like to take the opportunity to finish off our top 5 rankings of offensive skill positions. For those that missed it, we’ve done Top 5 49ers RB of all time and the Top 5 49ers WR of all time, which leaves us with QB’s.
It might seem like an easy exercise, but that fact is the list is top heavy, and it takes some effort to fill it out. Apart from having two HOF QB’s in the 80’s and early to mid 90s, the 49ers have suffered through a bit of a drought since then. A forgettable cast of characters including Tim Rattay, JT O’Sullivan, Ken Dorsey, and Blaine Gabbert have been at the helm for the Niners over the past two decades, but rest assured none of them made my list - or yours either I hope. So who did?
1. Joe Montana: If anyone wants to put Young here I wouldn’t argue. But for me Joe is the beginning and the end of the discussion for all time greatest 49ers QB.
2. Steve Young: Statisticallly, Young was better than Montana. Higher completion percentage, touchdown percentage, yards per attempt, and QB Rating. Toss in another 3,500 rushing yards and 37 rushing TD’s and you have a strong case for number one. The only real knock against Young is that he only has one ring, and Montana has four. But that’s enough to put him 2nd on my list.
3. John Brodie: Before my time so I never saw him play, but he was under center for the 49ers for an unbelievable 17 years which counts for something. Brodie led the league in passing yards three times and TD passes twice, and was also the first QB ever to lineup and play in the shotgun formation, which was first devised by 49ers coach Red Hickey in 1960.
4. YA Tittle: Another one before my time but Tittle finished with a record of 45-31-2 while playing with the Niners from 1951-1960, and was part of the their famed “Million Dollar Backfield”. He was a 7 time pro bowler and in 1971 was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame.
5. Colin Kaepernick: Tough choice here, as the fifth spot on the list really came down to Jeff Garcia, Alex Smith, or Kaepernick. And politics aside, it really is tough for me to justify either Smith or Garcia over Kaepernick in his prime. The passing numbers for all three were reasonably similar, but I gave Kaepernick the nudge for adding 2,500 rushing yards, four playoff wins, and a SB appearance. Honestly, the three of them should probably be ranked equally, side by side here, but that would be taking the easy way out.
So there you have it, my top 5 All time 49ers QB’s. What does your top 5 list look like? Let us know in the comments below!
