Defensive end is entering his third year in the league with his eye on being NFL’s best.
Joe Thomas has made a smooth transition from All-Pro left tackle with the Cleveland Browns to NFL Network analyst.
Thomas is putting his knowledge of line play to good use at NFL.com by ranking the league’s current 10 best pass rushers. He has also not lost his respect for his former teammate, Myles Garrett, who comes in at No. 5 on Thomas’ list:
The former No. 1 overall pick is becoming one of the most productive pass rushers in the league. The 6-foot-4, 272-pound defensive end’s an absolute freak when you look at the way he can dip and bend around the corner and underneath the offensive tackle’s hands. He has a perfect combination of athleticism, mobility and incredible power to throw a lineman into the quarterback, which makes him a bad matchup whether he’s facing someone big and strong or small and athletic on the offensive line. He can also bump inside and play defensive tackle in the passing game. His versatility will give new Browns defensive coordinator Steve Wilks plenty of opportunities to find match-ups to exploit.
It is the second time in the past few days that Garrett has earned recognition for his play, as he made his debut at No. 49 on the league’s list of the best 100 players for 2019.
The praise is nice, but Garrett spoke last week about not being satisfied until he sits atop the list of the league’s best defensive players, according to clevelandbrowns.com:
“As the best defensive player in the league -- that is the goal. That is the only way to stamp your name in the history books. If you are the best defensive player, you have to win Defensive Player of the Year. That is always the goal. If I don’t win that, it is about being a team player and taking my team to the Super Bowl.”
Given his play through the first two years of his career, Garrett appears to be well on his way to achieving that goal.
