The stupid, idiot Jacksonville Jaguars are back, folks!
With training camp less than 48 hours away, Yannick Ngakoue remains a mystery. Will the team sign him to an 11th hour contract extension? Will he sit out of camp?
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio is reporting that Ngakoue will be a holdout because contract negotiations have broken down and the two sides can’t come to an agreement.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, contract talks between the Jaguars and defensive end Yannick Ngakoue have broken down, making a training-camp holdout likely. The fourth-year pass rusher is due to make $2.025 million in 2019, the final year of his rookie deal.
Let me repeat that — the team that paid a potato to throw passes off of helmets and waste years of a generational defense is hesitating on a lay up with a third round draft pick that has more than outperformed his rookie contract.
Yannick is playing out the string on a four-year deal worth $3.4 million.
Since 2016, Ngakoue is tied for 10th in the league with 29.5 sacks.
That’s more than Demarcus Lawrence (26), who signed a $100 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
And Trey Flowers (21), who signed a $90 million contract with the Detroit Lions.
And Dee Ford (25), who signed an $85.5 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
And on... and on... and on...
It’s an absolute disgrace and the players in this locker room are watching. Tom Coughlin gives us the warm fuzzies for his success early with the team but he and Dave Caldwell are committing roster malpractice. And while it would be nice to have an owner who would step in on these sorts of things, Shad Khan hasn’t shown much initiative since purchasing the team in 2012.
If this front office isn’t careful, players who deserve premier, long term deals — cough, Jalen Ramsey, cough — will decide to look elsewhere rather than play hardball with a disappointing, small market team.
