Related: Former Patriots national scout DuJuan Daniels to join Raiders as a senior executive
The 2019 offseason has been marked by turnover for the New England Patriots: from the retirement of Rob Gronkowski, to the free agency departures of Trey Flowers and Trent Brown, among others, to six assistant coaches as well as character coach Jack Easterby leaving the team. On top of that, the reigning world champions also had to replace a key member of their scouting department: national scout DuJuan Daniels.
Daniels originally joined the Patriots in 2006 as a scouting assistant, before getting promoted to area scout in 2008. Five years later, the former Boston College wide receiver moved up to the national level — a role he has held ever since and in which he earned himself three Super Bowl rings. He left the club in May to pursue other opportunities, however, and ended up in a senior executive position with the Oakland Raiders.
The departure naturally had a trickle-down effect on New England’s entire college scouting department below its director, Monti Ossenfort. Now, it looks as if the Patriots have found a way to replace the departed Daniels: a pair of former area scouts will fill his shoes. The scouts in question are Matt Groh and Brandon Yeargan, who were already expected to be in the running for the job when reports of Daniels leaving the team originally broke.
After all, both men are among the senior scouts on New England’s staff. Groh came to the Patriots as a scouting assistant in 2011 and served in that role for two seasons; he moved up the ranks to area scout in 2013 and held that role ever since. Yeargan, meanwhile, joined the club in 2013 — also serving as a scouting assistant — and was promoted to area scout the following year. Now both he and Groh have taken the next step in their careers.
In order to fill their now-vacant roles as area scouts, New England has opted to move Tucker Ingraham from his role as scouting assistant to area scout. Ingraham, a former football operations intern, spent the last two years working in his previous job. Now, he joins D.J. Debick, Tim Heffelfinger, Jonathan Howard and Camren Williams on the area scouting crew.
