Packers release DL Mike Daniels, and the Chiefs might be interested

The Chiefs showed interest in trading for Mike Daniels before he was released

The Green Bay Packers announced on Wednesday that they had released defensive lineman Mike Daniels after failing to find a trade partner.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Kansas City Chiefs were among teams who would be interested in Daniels and tried to make a trade for him before his release.

The 2017 Pro Bowler has compiled 29.0 sacks over his seven-year career and pressured the quarterback a total of 271 times. In his Pro Bowl year, he racked up five sacks, 14 quarterback hits and a forced fumble. Daniels started nine games for the Packers last season before injuring his foot against Seattle on November 15 and spending the remainder of the year on the injured reserve.

Daniels was due $8.1 million in 2019 in base salary and roster bonuses.

While it may seem odd to pursue a defensive lineman before they have agreed to terms with Chris Jones, Daniels could be a great addition for the Chiefs. He would add talent to an already promising defensive line, and it makes sense for a team trying to cash in on their Super Bowl window to sign short-term deals for great players.

The Chiefs have around $25 million remaining in cap space to utilize in their pursuit of Daniels.
