Another running back enters the fray
With all of the members of the 2019 Minnesota Vikings officially reporting to Eagan for Training Camp tomorrow, the Vikings have made another move, this time adding another body to the offensive backfield.
The Vikings have claimed running back De’Angelo Henderson, late of the New York Jets. To make room on the 90-man roster, they have waived undrafted free agent cornerback Micah Abernathy.
Henderson was drafted in the sixth round (#203 overall) by the Denver Broncos in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Coastal Carolina. During his time with the Chanticleers. . .which might be the coolest nickname in college sports, not gonna lie. . .he set an NCAA Division 1 record by scoring a touchdown in 35 consecutive games. He couldn’t get much traction with the Broncos, however, receiving just seven carries for 13 yards. He did have a 29-yard touchdown reception in the Broncos’ regular season finale.
After being waived by the Broncos, he caught on with the Jets for 2018, but appeared in just three games, carrying the ball twice for 19 yards.
Abernathy was one of the Vikings’ signings in the post-draft free agent frenzy this past April. With the Vikings trying out a couple of veteran corners on Wednesday, it appears they might want a little more experience at the position in the wake of recent events, so Abernathy’s release makes sense.
So, the Vikings are still at 90 players as they descend upon the Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center tomorrow for the first practice of Training Camp 2019 on Friday. We’ll see if De’Angelo Henderson can have some better luck here than he’s had in his career thus far.
