We’re counting down the days until the Panthers kick off their 2019 season, and there are 56 to go.
The No. 56 is currently worn by Carolina Panthers linebacker Jermaine Carter. Here’s a look at Carter and his potential contribution in Carolina for the 2019 season.
Jermaine Carter, Linebacker
Bio
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 225 lbs
Age: 24 years
College: Maryland
Experience: 2 years
The Panthers drafted Carter in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft. He made the 53-man roster and served on special teams and as a back-up linebacker. This was not an unexpected development for Carter. The Panthers always look for linebackers that can serve in both those roles.
Carter played in all 16 games, starting one in place of the injured Shaq Thomspon in Week 16. He tallied 11 tackles on the season and one quarterback pressure.
It’s hard to predict what Carter’s contribution will be in 2018. There is always the chance he doesn’t make the roster though his odds seem good given the changes in the offseason. Gone are former back-ups David Mayo and Ben Jacob. This should increase Carter’s chances of sticking and possibly lead to an increased role. The likely scenario is he serves in a similar role as 2018. He may need to put on a few pounds to play on the inside in a 3-4 if that is where he is needed.
