Of course, he has also suffered a season-ending injury in each of those seasons. The talent is obvious. The durability is in question. Ronald Darby ended up settling for a one-year, prove-it deal (worth around $6.5 million plus incentives) with the Eagles. The team wanted to keep him around more than most expected. As such, a healthy Darby figures to be a starting corner for the Eagles in 2019. It’s just a matter of when he’s going to be ready to get back on the field. Darby warmed up with the team and did some position drills during spring practices, so a Week 1 return doesn’t seem off the table. 2019 is a big year for Darby. He’s hoping to test the free agent market again in search of a big deal next offseason. He’ll have to be more consistently good than he was in 2018. He’ll also have to stay healthy after previously missing eight games in 2017 and seven in 2018. Darby has talent. The pressure is on the 25-year-old needs to put it together this year.

What effect do the potential holdouts by Ezekiel Elliott and Jadeveon Clowney have on the Eagles? - PhillyVoice
Well, we’ve covered this at other points during this offseason, but the Eagles have about $21 million in cap space, and Howie Roseman has been known to make splash acquisitions in the past. Of course, Clowney wouldn’t come cheap. The cost to acquire him would probably include (a) at least a first-round pick, and (b) something in the neighborhood of a $20 million per year new deal. Certainly, you wouldn’t make that kind of trade without having the parameters of a deal in place. This would be a move of the, “Eff it, let’s go all in on the Super Bowl this year” variety. Obviously, in this scenario, Clowney would not be a third DE. He would start (duh), which would relegate either Brandon Graham or Derek Barnett to more of a situational role. To be clear, this is a long shot, but there’s certainly an argument to be made that Clowney and the Texans are continuing to move closer to a breakup.

I look at Dallas Goedert and, to me, my eyes just light up with the possibilities for the Eagles’ offense in 2019. Why? His presence alongside Zach Ertz in the Eagles “12 personnel” grouping provides Doug Pederson with a grouping that defenses will have trouble matching up with. It’s first-and-10, and the Eagles come out with this look. Will they run it? Or throw it? Will the defense respond with a smaller nickel subpackage? If so, the Eagles can try and run the ball. Will the opponent go big with its base defense to defend the run? If so, the Eagles can throw and take advantage of matchups in space. Not only that, but when you have a running back who can be moved around and used as a versatile chess piece (like how Miles Sanders can, in theory), that opens up the possibilities of going into hurry-up mode and really throwing the defense for a loop. There is a lot that I can write on this topic, but make no mistake about it, opponents have to prepare for this two-tight end look from the Eagles, and Dallas proved why last year as a rookie in flashes.

Linebacker Zach Brown should be the big needle mover here, as he ranked 14th in run-stop percentage (8.9) last year in Washington and has had back-to-back run-defense grades over 80.0.

Johnson, riding a two-Pro Bowl streak himself at right tackle for the Eagles, knows what you’re thinking: The offensive linemen who gathered this past weekend for their second-annual OL Masterminds Summit are simply trying to respond. Johnson agrees, in part. “I think you see all these pass-rush summits, all these defensive linemen have a cohesiveness, and that’s something the offensive line has never really had,” Johnson told USA TODAY Sports. “I wanted all the NFL linemen to start communicating and start really talking football, something that’s never really happened.” After all, Johnson says, offensive linemen are “protectors of very valuable men.”

In light of the possibility that Elliott could be charged with simple battery, Goodell has created a conundrum of sorts. By declining to punish to Elliott, Goodell annoyed Johnson and unintentionally made it more likely that Johnson would then press charges against Elliott. Goodell now faces the possibility of Elliott being criminally charged after Goodell cleared Elliott. If Elliott is charged, it would be at least partly because Goodell had cleared Elliott. This is not the ideal situation for Goodell. Goodell likely could—but probably wouldn’t—change his mind and punish Elliott should the running back be charged with a crime.

Sources familiar with both Elliott and the Cowboys said the two sides have been talking about Elliott and a potential new deal for roughly the last month. Those talks have been slow to progress in any meaningful way, at least partially because the Prescott deal remains the top priority for Dallas and is expected to set the table for the Elliott and Cooper extensions. One source said that lack of progress has led to frustration on Elliott’s part, which appeared to be a nod to Monday’s ProFootballTalk report that Elliott has told associates that he is planning to hold out of training camp, where the Cowboys are scheduled to report on July 26.

With more eyes and attention on him and his team, Jason Garrett has failed in the eyes of many by not winning a Super Bowl or even appearing in an NFC Championship Game. It didn’t help his cause publicly when Doug Pederson led the Philadelphia Eagles to a victory in Super Bowl LII. The national temperature is generally pretty low on Jason Garrett, but it is starting to reach ridiculous places. NFL.com did their annual head coach rankings and guess where they slotted Garrett? 17th. That’s outside of the top half.

Brandon Scherff’s 2018 season ended in Week 9 after he suffered a torn pec that landed him on injured reserve. The Redskins offensive line has been decimated with injuries over the last few years, and Sherff’s name was added last year. The Redskins have a stud at RG, and a lot of question marks on the rest of the line. They also have a lot of money tied up at the tackle positions, and there are reports that LT Trent Williams wants a new deal. The Redskins can’t pay everyone, so is Brandon Scherff worth getting paid like a top guard in the NFL?

The long-term wisdom of signing Tate might be questioned, though his contract is fairly team friendly. The Giants can get out of it after two seasons with only a $2.5 million cap hit by designating Tate a post-June 1 cut in 2021, should that be something they want to do. Tate, though, should help the Giants over the next two seasons. The former Notre Dame star shrugged off the idea that there is pressure on him to replace Beckham’s production.

Day 3 Projections: Jordan Love (Utah State, JR) is being called “toolsy” by NFL scouts. Nathan Stanley (Iowa, SR) is viewed as a mid-level starter by at least one NFL scout. Shea Patterson (Michigan, SR) was notably left off this 2020 QB preview. Sam Ehlinger (Texas, JR) is a second-tier Heisman Trophy favorite. D’Eriq King (Houston, SR) is an analytics sweetheart, but he’s reportedly 5-foot-8. Jalen Hurts (Oklahoma, SR) has enough accuracy, intangibles, and athleticism. Joe Burrow (LSU, SR) brought attention to scouts with a strong late-season push. Steven Montez (Colorado, SR) has a “first-round arm, but he’s a Day 3 pick, at best.” Blake Barnett (South Florida, SR) only because of this NFL scout-based column.

Allow me to preface all of this by saying that I’d love to see more drop kicks. It’d actually be pretty damn awesome if an NFL team had a quarterback capable of consistently nailing drop kicks through the uprights. After every touchdown that team would be able to set up for a two-point conversion. If the defense is lined up to stop the play, the passer can just step back and make a chip shot kick for one point. Hell, it might even be easier than an extra point, considering it’d be about 15 or so yards closer now that kickers have to try from 33 yards.
