The Jacksonville Jaguars have trimmed to their very first 53-man roster. I’d expect there to be several changes to the bottom of the roster, even as soon as tonight, but as it stands here’s how it looks right now.

Quarterback (2)
Nick Foles, Gardner Minshew
This is what we all knew was going to happen, but in our hearts we wanted Alex McGough (or some developmental guy who could flash huge potential) to stick around. McGough has a good chance to make the practice squad if he clears waivers — and that’s a huge if. But with Minshew’s inconsistencies in the preseason, I’d be surprised if Jacksonville doesn’t target a veteran over the next few days. The New England Patriots just released Brian Hoyer. Could be a good insurance policy if (or when) Foles isn’t able to play at some point this season.
Running back (4)
Leonard Fournette, Ryquell Armstead, Alfred Blue
I am sick and damn tired of the Jaguars going light on running back despite building their offense like a power run team. You’re thin on talent at receiver, you beef up your starting offensive line, and you buy an $88 million decision maker of a quarterback who doesn’t have a rocket for an arm — why are you skimping at running back?
Wide receiver (6)
Dede Westbrook, Marqise Lee, Chris Conley, D.J. Chark Jr., Keelan Cole, C.J. Board
I’m glad to see Board make it. He earned it with a productive preseason. I’m not glad to see Cole make it. He has fallen off a cliff and is seemingly still falling after a breakout 2017 season. Westbrook is going to be a star in this offense with Foles at the helm. And if Lee can stay healthy, he’ll be an important piece to stretch the field.
Tight end (4)
Geoff Swaim, Josh Oliver, James O’Shaughnessy, Ben Koyack
Whew. This is a thin group to say the least. Swaim is going to see a lot of reps early in the season while Oliver continues to rehab his injury. O’Shaughnessy looked okay in preseason and Koyack showed nothing. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride at this position, folks.
Offensive line (9)
Cam Robinson, Andrew Norwell, Brandon Linder, A.J. Cann, Jawaan Taylor, Will Richardson, Cedric Ogbuehi, Tyler Shatley, Brandon Thomas
What I’m most excited about with this group is that they’re entering the season all healthy. Depending on who they go with between Richardson and Cann, the loser of the starting job offers decent depth. My gut is they go with Cann because he’s more experienced and Richardson can play more spots as a backup, but I think Richardson is better. Very surprised Josh Wells isn’t here as the tenth guy.
Edge rushers (4)
Josh Allen, Yannick Ngakoue, Lerentee McCray, Dawuane Smoot
What a stud group. We know what Ngakoue can do, Allen took over the only preseason game he played a substantial number of snaps, Smoot really improved this offseason, and McCray is a solid special teams player.
Defensive line (6)
Calais Campbell, Marcell Dareus, Abry Jones, Taven Bryan, Eli Ankou, Dontavius Russell
Another stud group anchored by Campbell, who is showing no signs of aging. Dareus was a steal for the Day 3 pick we gave up. I’m interested to see what they do with the rookie Russell — he was a four year starter in the SEC so I’d assume he can play but he hasn’t shown much so far. Wish this group included Datone Jones but... oh well.
Linebacker (6)
Myles Jack, Quincy Williams, Leon Jacobs, Najee Goode, Joe Giles-Harris, D.J. Alexander
This is the wild card. It could be great with Jack in the middle, Williams at SAM, and Jacobs at weakside... or it could all fall apart. Just pray no one gets injured because that depth is going to be rough in real, live NFL games.
Cornerback (5)
Jalen Ramsey, A.J. Bouye, D.J. Hayden, Tre Herndon, Breon Borders
We know Ramsey and Bouye are studs. Hayden is a fine nickel cornerback. And Herndon and Borders balled out in preseason. Glad they went with production over experience here.
Safety (5)
Jarrod Wilson, Ronnie Harrison, Cody Davis, Andrew Wingard, Josh Robinson
Not having C.J. Reavis here is very puzzling. He was the featured player all week for their matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, appearing on the website, in interviews, on tickets, and in social media graphics. He had a good preseason too. Why they’d go with Wingard over him is strange. Harrison flashed all the makings of a stud last year so his sophomore season will be one to watch.
Special teams (3)
Josh Lambo (K), Logan Cooke (P), Matt Overton (LS)
I don’t even think I saw a camp kicker or punter to challenge Lambo and Cooke. And glad to have Overton back. When your three special teams guys can grow together year after year it minimizes the chances of botched snaps, missed calls, and more.
