The Chiefs general manager said that Kansas City plans to “take a peek” at two-time All-Pro running back.
One of the most surprising NFL roster cuts of Saturday afternoon was the Buffalo Bills’ decision to move on from veteran running back LeSean McCoy. The Bills saved $6.425 million in salary cap space by releasing the 31-year-old, two-time All-Pro, and he is now a free agent.
As explained on AP earlier, media members quickly made the connection that current Chiefs head coach Andy Reid originally drafted McCoy back in 2009 when Reid was still head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach was asked about the running back on his post-cut conference call on Saturday evening, and though he wouldn’t comment directly until the release becomes official through the NFL, it sounded like there could be some interest.
“As a step back, broad-view type of perspective; listen, we play a lot of common opponents and got to see him on tape,” Veach said. “He is still a talented player and does a lot of great things in the passing game. If it is official, like it has been reported, I’m sure that he is a guy that we will take a peek at. We kind of have a rapport with (him).”
The Houston Texans, LA Chargers, Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders have already been mentioned as teams who may also have interest in McCoy. The Chiefs traded Carlos Hyde to the Texans earlier Saturday, choosing to keep halfbacks Damien Williams, Darwin Thompson and Darrel Williams on their initial 53-man roster.
In 13 starts last season, McCoy rushed 161 times for 514 yards (3.2 yards per attempt) and three touchdowns. He also had 34 receptions for 238 yards. McCoy eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards in both 2016 and 2017.
