Colts Claim Ex-Texans Running Back D’Onta Foreman Off Waivers

The Indianapolis Colts announced on Monday that the team claimed former Houston Texans running back D’Onta Foreman off waivers and waived fellow running back Keith Ford in a corresponding roster move.

Originally drafted by the Houston Texans in the 3rd round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Foreman has rushed for 326 career rushing yards on 85 carries (3.8 ypc avg) and 2 rushing touchdowns in 11 games (1 start).

He has also amassed 8 receptions for 111 career receiving yards (13.9 ypr avg) and a touchdown reception.

Last season, Foreman appeared in just one game, rushing for -1 yards on 7 carries—having spent time on the Texans’ PUP list recovering from a torn Achilles.

While Foreman struggled with his weight and explosiveness last season, ultimately, the 23 year old running back was waived by the Texans for “poor work habits” and being late to team meetings.

Still, Foreman remains young and talented.

However, any continued immaturity issues will not stand in Indianapolis, where general manager Chris Ballard has built a locker room culture founded on accountability and hard work.

With veteran back Spencer Ware being recently placed on PUP, the Colts had a need for a power back. At 6’1”, 236 pounds, Foreman has the unquestioned size to effectively run between the tackles in short-yardage situations.

Unlike his former team though, the Colts have significantly less invested in Foreman, so any work ethic issues, and he’ll be quickly granted his walking papers.

It’s also no lock that Foreman earns a job outright either, as he faces formidable competition from the likes of Jonathan Williams for the 4th running back spot—which requires reliable special teams play.

That being said, it’s a worthwhile roll of the dice by Ballard.

One that is low risk, high reward—while potentially sticking it to the Colts divisional rival in the process—should Foreman impress in Indianapolis.
