NFL players who don’t report to their training camps by Tuesday lose an accrued season toward free agency. That is important for many players as you need four seasons to qualify for unrestricted free agency.
Players with only three accrued seasons are restricted free agents, subject to the RFA tenders and teams’ ability to match any offer. Two accrued seasons or less means you’re an exclusive rights free agent and are basically stuck with whatever your current team wants to pay.
This is very relevant for players coming off the standard four-year rookie contract; they want all four to be accrued seasons so that they can be unrestricted free agents at the end of the deal.
But Ezekiel Elliott has a five-year contract.
Thanks to Zeke being a former first-round draft pick, Dallas had a team option to add a fifth year to the end of his rookie deal. To nobody’s surprised, they exercised this right back in April and extended Elliott’s contract through the 2020 season.

Zack Martin’s back might be something that stays a thing for a while
Speaking to the DallasCowboys.com digital team during the broadcast of the scrimmage, Stephen Jones provided an update on Zack Martin’s back situation.
He noted that the team is trying to be conservative with their star players which is obviously smart practice but he did add that the team’s doctors feel like with the proper rehab they’re hopeful that Zack can be alright “over the next couple of weeks.”

Jon’Vea Johnson’s buzz started in the spring, but he’s continued to beat in-house competition at training camp.
David Helman of the Dallas Cowboys’ official website noted Johnson and Jalen Guyton left defenders several steps behind Monday. Both added encores Tuesday, per Rob Phillips, who also writes for the club’s website.
We’ll focus on Johnson since chatter about him goes back to organized team activities and mandatory minicamp. He’s a big-play receiver who averaged 18.1 yards per reception at Toledo. Based on camp observations, the 6’0”, 192-pound pass-catcher has a solid pair of hands.

The Cowboys have yet to suffer any major injuries in camp, but the guys who are dealing with things are being brought along slowly.
Lee appears closer to a return than Martin because he did some special teams work in the morning walkthrough before Sunday’s practice. Lee said he sprained his right medial collateral ligament when his leg was rolled up on a play in the first padded practice last Monday.
The 33-year-old Lee has missed at least one game because of injury in all but one of his nine seasons. The exception was 2016, Lee’s only All-Pro year.
“It’s obviously frustrating,” Lee said. “But I am mature of now to look ahead and not let the frustration mess with my preparation. Continue to look at the practices ahead of me and the goals ahead of me.”
Receiver Amari Cooper was held out of practice for a second straight day Sunday with a bruised heel. Garrett wouldn’t rule Cooper out of practice earlier in the day, so the injury isn’t considered serious.
“He was moving around fine during the walkthrough so we’ll see how the day progresses,” Garrett said. “If he doesn’t practice today we’re off tomorrow then hopefully we can get him back out there on Tuesday.”

Daniel Wise: You might say it’s uphill climb for Wise because he went undrafted out of Kansas, but the Cowboys did have a mid-round grade on the son of former NFL lineman Deatrich Wise. The younger Wise has lined up at tackle and end in camp. In one-on-one drills, he stalled rushing inside against guard Xavier Su’a-Filo’s power. But he showed versatility with a successful speed rush outside against offensive tackle Brandon Knight.

Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper aren’t the only negotiations taking place while the Cowboys are in training camp.
The franchise’s contract with the city of Oxnard ends with the conclusion of this camp in mid-August. Club and city officials have held several discussions since the team arrived in Southern California, sources said, and there’s optimism the Cowboys will return next year.
This marks the eighth consecutive year the Cowboys have trained exclusively in Oxnard. The club has held part or all of its camp here 14 times since its initial trip in 2001.

Flying under many people’s radar is second year receiver, Cedrick Wilson. It’s understandable why, too. The 2018 sixth round pick was injured early in camp last year, never really giving fans and media a look at what he has to offer.
But after a year on IR, Wilson is back with a vengeance. Reports have stated the 6’2” big play machine from Boise State has bulked up considerably in the offseason. He’s more familiar with the offense and ready to make an instant impact here in camp.
Last season, Ced made an early impression on the coaching staff:
“Ced has picked up the offense probably better than most of the guys in the room,” receivers coach Lal said last year. “And now it’s become like, ‘Ok, we need a guy to run in there – Ced, go in there’ And he knows what to do.”
