On Sunday, the New England Patriots and free agency acquisition Dontrelle Inman mutually decided to part ways which in turn allowed the team to add recently reinstated wide receiver Josh Gordon to its 90-man roster. Inman’s agent reportedly requested his client’s release following the news of Gordon’s reinstatement; New England granted the wish of Inman’s camp and parted ways with the 30-year-old midway through preseason.

Despite a largely uneventful tenure with the Patriots, Inman has already found a new home: according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, he has decided to sign with the Los Angeles Chargers (also having an offer on the table from the New York Jets). Inman, of course, spent three-and-a-half seasons with the club between 2014 and 2017 — the most successful stretch of his career. Now, he is trying to revitalize it in a somewhat familiar environment.

The Patriots originally signed Inman, who also played for the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts since leaving the Chargers, in mid-May on a one-year, $1.5 million free agency contract. However, he was one of the bigger disappointments of spring workouts and training camp: the veteran receiver never was able to carve out a consistent role in the team’s offense and as a result was buried on the depth chart.

During New England’s first two preseason games, he played 45 of a possible 152 offensive snaps (29.6%) but caught just three passes for 40 yards while mostly playing with the second and third string unit. The Patriots eventually parting ways with Inman therefore seemed to be a foregone conclusion — especially with considerable reinforcements on their way in the form of Gordon as well as Julian Edelman and Demaryius Thomas.
