Wednesday, August 21st, 2019 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from the Interent
After 11 months away from NFL football, Jimmy Garoppolo was finally able to get real game action. His return was highly anticipated, but it was far from good. He went 1 for 6 with zero yards with one interception and Denver should have had another one. The rust was inevitable for a player that was away from the game for so long, but Jimmy never looked comfortable in Denver. The Denver defense put pressure on him and he looked shaky with them getting near him.
Jimmy’s biggest hurdle before Week 1 is the mental side of getting back on the field after an injury. He is going to have to trust that his knee will hold up from the hits he’s going to take and has to be able to throw accurate passes even with the pressure coming. He has still only started 10 regular season games in his career so he’s still an unknown as a quarterback. He has to play as much as possible before the regular season starts to gain confidence and knock off the rust from missing the last 11 months. Fortunately, the 49ers have 2 more preseason games to help him get ready for the regular season.
The next game is going to be big for Jimmy because he returns to Kansas City where he tore his ACL in Week 3 last year. He will also get more playing time than he did on Monday. Game 3 is the typical dress rehearsal for the starters with most teams having the starters play the 1st half and one series in the 2nd half. Monday’s game was eye opening for people who expected Jimmy and the offense to immediately click. If Jimmy has a much better game in Game 2, that would be a huge for Jimmy’s confidence and the team can feel much better about being ready for Week 1 against Tampa.
