Golden Nuggets: What 49ers player would you be most upset to see cut?

NFL: Preseason-San Francisco 49ers at Denver Broncos Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

It’s August 31st and after releasing nine players on Friday, the 49ers are set to reduce their final roster from 81 players to 53 by 4pm EST. It’s obviously a stressful time for those players who are on the bubble and have not been guaranteed a roster spot as of yet. Their careers and livelihood are on the line, and their success or failure is played out on a very public forum.

But for fans - to a lesser degree of course - who have grown attached to several of those players over the span of training camp and the preseason, it can be a difficult time as well.

And with the final cutdown just hours away, it begs the question: what player would you be most upset to see cut?

Maybe Jeff Wilson Jr, who is coming off of very impressive preseason performance against the Chargers on Thursday night? There is definitely a contingent pulling for him to be the fourth halfback on the roster should Shanahan choose to keep four.

Or maybe Kevin Givens, the undrafted free agent out of Penn St who, according to Brian Baldinger was the best defensive lineman on the field in the preseason game against Denver? He seemed a longshot at first with the 49ers depth at the position, but could he benefit from Kentavius Street’s injury and subsequent IR designation?

The list of talented players and fan favorites on the bubble is long. Safety Adrian Colbert, undrafted LB Azeez Al-Shaair, Ronald Blair III, Daniel Brunskill, Kaden Smith, Joshua Garnett, Richie James Jr., Jordan Matthews, Justin Skule, Ross Reynolds.

But for me, the player I would be most upset to see cut is defensive linemen Damontre Moore. I’ll admit, I didn’t buy into Moore early in camp. I’ve been around long enough to have seen more than my fair share of players flashing early in the preseason only to become afterthoughts come cut time. And Moore is no spring chicken. He’s entering his 7th season in the NFL, with very little to show for it.

But after hearing his story, and watching him play this preseason, I’ve moved from being skeptical to being sold. And with Nick Bosa looking more and more likely to miss time to start the season, I think Moore is the perfect option to add depth on the edge while Bosa continues to heal. And while I understand that the 49ers are incredibly deep at the position, and will most likely only keep nine defensive linemen on the roster. I’ll be seriously disappointed if Damontre Moore isn’t one of them.

So who is it for you? What player on the bubble do you really want to see make the team? Let us know in the comments below!
