Packers’ Trevor Davis finds the end zone in impressive preseason debut

Davis finally got on the field in game action on Thursday night and backed up his excellent performances in practice.

It was a long time coming for Green Bay Packers wide receiver Trevor Davis, but he all but locked up a roster spot with his performance on Thursday evening in Winnipeg. Davis was a consistent performer in OTAs and early on in training camp this summer, but an injury in practice the week of the team’s preseason opener kept him off the field for the first two games.

With Davis back healthy for game number three, a roster spot was hanging there for the taking. And take it he has.

Davis opened up his game with a 17-yard punt return, then tacked on 18 yards on an end-around on his first touch on offense. A 20-yard diving catch from Tim Boyle was an excellent follow-up, but Davis was not done.

Early in the second quarter, Davis found the end zone. He hauled in a floating touchdown pass from Boyle, officially a 13-yarder due to the shortened field in Winnipeg, and all but assured himself of a spot on the 53-man roster in the process:

Davis’ catch was a great sign for a player who too often has failed to show up in game action on offense. It is particularly important for him to make a contested catch like this as well, as that area has been a struggle for him in the past.

Davis remains in the game on the Packers’ next drive, catching another pass for 13 yards, but he has nothing more to prove at this point. He should be on the team’s opening 53 barring a season-ending injury in the final six-plus quarters of preseason action.
