BJ Goodson Trade Details: Packers swap 7th-round picks, release James Crawford

The Packers gave up slightly more than nothing to bring in a new face at linebacker.

As is often the case in the NFL, making the Green Bay Packers’ 53-man roster on Saturday was no guarantee of staying there, at least for one player. Unfortunately for linebacker James Crawford, an addition on Monday meant that he was not long for the roster in 2019.

The Packers traded with the Giants on Monday, acquiring linebacker BJ Goodson. However, for Crawford, that was an unfortunate move. The Packers waived Crawford on Monday to make room for Goodson, likely putting an end to his Packers career.

Crawford was a surprise keep on the 53-man roster in 2018, earning a spot on the heels of a big performance in the preseason finale. He was a mainstay of the Packers’ special teams units all last season, suiting up in every game and recording nine total tackles. He often struggled at inside linebacker on defense during the 2019 preseason, but made the initial 53 once again based largely on his special teams ability.

As for the Goodson acquisition, the Packers made the move in order to avoid taking their chances with acquiring the linebacker on waivers. The Packers agreed to a conditional swap of draft picks in the 7th round of the 2020 NFL Draft, offering up the 7th-rounder that they acquired from the Baltimore Ravens last year in exchange for Ty Montgomery.

This move also hearkens back to a trade late in the 2018 preseason, when the Packers acquired linebacker Antonio Morrison from the Indianapolis Colts amid injury issues at the position. Goodson now replaces Crawford as the third healthy inside linebacker on the Packers’ roster.

Along with waiving Crawford, the Packers also released safety Mike Tyson with an injury settlement. That clears Tyson from the team’s injured reserve list.
