Eagles complete their reversal of last week’s practice squad change

NFL: Preseason-Minnesota Vikings at Buffalo Bills Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Back to the way it was.

A week ago from today, the Philadelphia Eagles promoted practice squad cornerback Craig James to their 53-man roster and signed tight end Alex Ellis back to their practice squad after cutting him.

Now the reversal is complete. The Eagles re-signed Ellis to their 53-man roster earlier this week and now they’ve officially brought James back to their practice squad. All is as it once was. Order has been restored to the galaxy.

It’s not perfectly clear why the Eagles ever waived Ellis and promoted James in the first place. It makes some sense that the Eagles wanted an extra cornerback on their roster since they only have four healthy players at that position. But they also have five safeties on the roster and one of those guys could play corner in an emergency situation.

It never made much sense for the Eagles to go down to two tight ends on the 53, especially given 1) their plan to use a low of 12 personnel and 2) Goedert having dealt with a calf injury in the preseason. The Eagles paid the price for their mistake when they lost Goedert against the Falcons and then had to scrap their two tight end sets from the play sheet just minutes before the game.

Ellis could potentially be the Eagles’ second tight end behind Ertz if Goedert isn’t healthy enough to play against the Detroit Lions this week. Goedert was listed under “did not participate” for Wednesday’s walk-through.
