Colts release the initial names on their 2019 Practice Squad
With roster cuts and waiver claims officially out of the way, the Colts are now beginning the construction of their practice squad. Many popular preseason names will be brought back to the team while they also look to add new talent that hit free agency. A reminder that the practice squad is very fluid as Chris Ballard loves utilizing this to add multiple players throughout the year. Every one of these players that are added today may be gone by tomorrow with him. For now though, let’s meet the 2019 initial practice squad.
Phillip Walker, QB
Walker has been around the Colts for nearly a decade, or so it seems. An undrafted free agent out of Temple, Walker has spent the last two seasons with the Colts on their practice squad. Last season, he nearly set an NFL record for amount of times waived and re-signed to one team’s practice squad as he was narrowly beaten out by JT Barrett of the Saints. Walker struggled this preseason in his playing time but the Colts get an emergency QB back on the team that they have a ton of familiarity with.

Jake Eldrenkamp, OG
A waiver claim earlier this offseason, Eldrenkamp put together a good camp with the Colts. In his second year as an UDFA out of Washington, he is now on his third team in the NFL (Patriots and Rams). He also has experience with the Colts’ coaching staff as he played under Offensive Line Coach Chris Strausser at Washington University. With a player like Eldrenkamp, the Colts keep a solid offensive lineman with good technique and fundamentals as their “9th” lineman on the practice squad in case of injury throughout the season.

Quinton Flowers, RB
A former college quarterback, Flowers has made the full transition to running back in the NFL. He had a productive preseason with the Bengals even putting up a good six carries for 47 yard stat line against the Colts in the preseason finale. He even has some experience with players on the roster as he was the QB at USF when Marlon Mack was the running back there. Flowers is an athletic pass catching back who could be an emergency add to the roster if Jonathan Williams (Ribs) and Jordan Wilkins (Ankle) can’t go in week one.

Skai Moore, LB
Moore, another former UDFA, spent time with the Colts last season out of South Carolina University. He did spend some time on the Colts’ active roster later in the season with injuries to other linebackers. Moore was outplayed in the preseason by other roster bubble linebackers in Zaire Franklin and Matthew Adams which led to him being cut yesterday. With Moore, the team brings a familiar player back who could be an emergency call up if there is an injury to any one of their six rostered linebackers.

Jackson Barton, OT
The first non-UDFA on this list, Barton was the Colts’ 7th round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. A superb athlete, Barton had his fair share of struggles in the preseason this year. He never seemed to gain any ground on Le’Raven Clark as the team’s swing tackle. Now on the practice squad, Barton has a chance to iron out some of the raw aspects of his game and hopefully become an NFL caliber tackle in the future.

Ashton Dulin, WR
A UDFA in this past draft, Dulin left Malone as the most productive receiver in the school’s history. He also was a track star and All-American Kick Returner in college for Malone. In the preseason and in practices, Dulin showed flashes of that impressive skill set that led to so much production in college. The Colts also did keep him out of the final preseason game against the Bengals, likely to hide his skill set from other teams. With great athleticism and special teams ability, Dulin is likely the next man up if there were to be an injury to anyone in the current six man group on the roster.

Jalen Collins, CB
Collins has had a rocky road in the NFL. A former second round pick of the Atlanta Falcons, Collins led the team in tackles in the Super Bowl several years back. After multiple suspensions though, the team decided to waive him in 2017. He remained a free agent until the Colts picked him up for their practice squad late last season. Things appeared to be going up for Collins before a rough offseason and preseason that saw him getting beat for multiple big plays. Now back on the practice squad for the Colts, Collins looks to get back to his former self as a second round pick in 2016.
