With just days to go before the start of the 2019 NFL season, the defending NFC champions have inked a long-term extension with their franchise quarterback.

The Los Angeles Rams announced that Jared Goff has agreed to a four-year extension, which ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported is worth $134 million, including an NFL-record $110 million in guarantees. With two more years left on his existing rookie deal, he’s tied to the Rams for six years and $161 million. This news means that three of the NFL’s top-ten highest paid quarterbacks in terms of APY now reside in the NFC West - Russell Wilson tops the lot at $35 million per year, while Jimmy Garoppolo ($27.5 million) and Goff ($26.83 million) are 7th and 9th respectively.

Goff was historically bad in his rookie season, which was spent almost entirely under anti-offense. pro-mediocrity head coach Jeff Fisher. Sean McVay swooped in and Goff has thrown for 60 touchdowns and just 19 interceptions over the last two regular seasons, with Goff finishing 10th in QBR in 2018.

The 25-year-old has been at the helm for one of the NFL’s best offenses, although questions about Goff’s ability were definitely raised when the New England Patriots held the Rams to just 3 points in the Super Bowl, in part because they changed the defensive coverages after headset communication between McVay and Goff was turned off with 15 seconds on the play clock.

But last year is last year, and Goff is still plenty young enough that he can silence skeptics and really leave no doubt that he’ll soon become one of the league’s premier quarterbacks. What will surely interest Seattle Seahawks fans (and other NFC West rivals) is how the Rams will operate now that they’ve gone all-out to extend the contracts of Goff, Aaron Donald, Brandin Cooks, and Todd Gurley over the past couple of seasons.
