Ra’Shede Hageman appears unlikely to return to Falcons after suspension

Atlanta Falcons v Pittsburgh Steelers

The veteran defensive tackle was the basis of one of the surprise stories of the summer, but it appears that story ends here.

Ra’Shede Hageman’s return to the Falcons was surprising when it happened, but as time wore on we settled into thinking about what it might mean for the roster. With a two week suspension on deck for Hageman, many of us wondered whether he might join the defensive line rotation when he returned, with the Falcons cutting a surplus player elsewhere to make room for him.

The buzz for Hageman began to peter out over the last couple of weeks, with the team settling on a nine man defensive line rotation and squirreling away Austin Larkin on the practice squad. Now ESPN’s Vaughn McClure indicates that Hageman won’t be coming back to the Falcons after all when his suspension is up.

We’re still rooting for Hageman, who by all accounts has worked hard to put his past troubles behind him, but after all is said and done it appears his time in Atlanta will have to be an audition for another gig elsewhere in the NFL. The Falcons will roll on with an improved group that added Tyeler Davison, Allen Bailey, Adrian Clayborn, and John Cominsky in recent months, and hopefully they’ll be good enough to get the job done in a critical year.
