Next Gen stat: While playing for the Bucs in 2018, DeSean Jackson received an average of 6.9 yards of cushion pre-snap, the most among any receiver with at least 50 targets. Here’s the catch in which Jackson received the most cushion, a 17-yard completion in which Washington’s Foster Moreau gave Jackson 13.2 yards of cushion on a 1st-and-10 from the Tampa Bay 4-yard line. [...] Analysis: Jackson still managed 19 yards per reception. Everyone knows the deal: Jackson is going to take off downfield. It is his greatest gift. Since downfield throws started being tracked in 2006, he has the most receiving touchdowns on passes thrown 20-plus yards with 34 -- six more than the next-highest player. Defenders will continue to give him ample cushion, and it will still not be enough, even at age 32.
Doug Pederson expects four important injured Eagles to play in Week 1, talks starters at cornerback - BGN
Doug Pederson was asked about Brandon Brooks, Fletcher Cox, Nigel Bradham, and Ronald Darby and their availability for Week 1. He noted that they all practiced on Monday, but they haven’t made any official announcements yet. He said that they “fully expect” all of those guys named to be available on Sunday. The head coach was asked about Derek Barnett, who didn’t participate during the offseason as he was recovering from surgery. Pederson said, “I feel really, really good about Derek. He’s been probably the one that’s been practicing the most during training camp, with getting more reps each and every week. So, he’s in a really good spot”.

Pederson talked about Barnett being ready to go. Apparently he’s practice more than the others and has looked good (or at least that’s what DP is telling us). Barnett will have a chance to make plays this week. Skins LT Trent Williams is still holding out, if that’s even the right term. He is trying to force the team to trade him. For once, this isn’t about money. Williams is mad at the organization for how they handled a medical situation and he wants out. Barnett will be going against veteran Donald Penn. While Penn isn’t anywhere close to Williams level, he can be a competent tackle. Penn is 36 now and only started four games last year. We’ll have to see where he is. Barnett should have a chance to be disruptive.

1. Philadelphia Eagles: They’re ranked first even without factoring in rookie tackle Andre Dillard, who looks like he’s already the most talented backup tackle in the NFL. This preseason he earned an 83.8 pass-blocking grade on 75 passing snaps.

Eagles to have the best regular-season record: +950. The Eagles have become a trendy pick to get out of the NFC — and for good reason. The Eagles have a proven coach, a quarterback with an MVP ceiling and one of the best offensive lines in the league. They also have one of the deepest rosters, along with the league’s third-easiest schedule. Obviously, Carson Wentz has to prove he can stay healthy late in the season, the defense needs to make up for the loss in production from Michael Bennett and Chris Long and rookie running back Miles Sanders needs to contribute right away. But Philadelphia looks like a double-digit team with a high ceiling. Four teams (the Patriots, Chiefs, Rams and Saints) have lower odds than the Eagles in this category.

5. In case you missed it, Washington claimed running back Wendell Smallwood off of waivers and then added defensive tackle Treyvon Hester after he cleared waivers. Interesting. What kind of information can those two players really provide to Washington, a team that has studied the Eagles’ schemes for years and that ended last season playing Philadelphia? Besides, the Eagles will change up their non-verbal and verbal checks for this game, as they do every week. By the way, good luck to both Smallwood and Hester, both of whom helped the Eagles win in their time here.

The risk there is obvious. A team’s young, cost-controlled talent comes from those early rounds, and losing high picks cuts down on both a team’s margin for error in college scouting and flexibility to move around the board. Magnifying it is the fact that Deshaun Watson won’t be on a rookie deal for much longer, meaning filling out the roster with young players, from a cap perspective, will become more of a necessity. It’s why the Eagles, with Carson Wentz off his rookie deal, are now stockpiling, rather than dealing, their picks.

Quintin Demps, S, Philadelphia Eagles: ”He’ll need to beat out Sean Jones for a starting job, but even if he loses the race, Jones’ propensity for injury makes Demps the favorite to be the starter by the end of 2009.” I find Demps’ career fascinating. He didn’t start a game until the 2013 season, but he played until 2017. He had six interceptions and actually got Pro Bowl votes in 2016, then in 2017 he started three games and never played an NFL down again thereafter. The Eagles drafted Nate Allen in the first round in 2010 after Demps couldn’t really stake a claim to the job in 2009. Jones did get hurt, as the comment predicted, but instead of Demps playing, Macho Harris started eight games as a fifth-round rookie. Harris would go on to play in three more games in his entire NFL career thereafter. If you look hard enough at Demps’ career, you start to believe the moon landing actually is fake and that the Illuminati prevented him from seeing more playing time. In actuality, it was because he just wasn’t a very instinctive safety. He needed a dime role so that he could play closer to the line of scrimmage for most of his career. Safeties are pretty rare additions to the list, and I’d say this one counts as a hit for Barnwell just because of the length of Demps’ career, even if that career was just really odd. Demps was rangy -- he ran a 4.39 40-yard dash at the NFL combine -- he just needed a little direction from time to time. I would be intrigued enough to consider a player like this for the bottom of the list today.

Redskins sign former Eagles DT Treyvon Hester, add OLB Chris Odom to the practice squad - Hogs Haven
The Redskins made the Treyvon Hester signing official over an hour after it was reported. They also announced that they have completed their 10-man practice squad by signing OLB Chris Odom, who was cut by the Falcons. The Redskins had two open spots in their 53-man roster after placing RB Shaun Wilson and OLB Jordan Brailford on IR yesterday. They have filled one of those spots by signing former Philadelphia Eagles DT Treyvon Hester. The Redskins previously only had 5 defensive linemen on the roster, and two of them [Tim Settle (knee) and Caleb Brantley (Lisfranc)] have been dealing with injuries during the preseason.

Washington has a problem on its hands. The team is in the middle of a lengthy holdout with seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams, which doesn’t seem to be coming to an end anytime soon. To help fill the massive void left by Williams’ absence, Washington signed veteran offensive tackle Donald Penn to compete with Geron Christian for the starting left tackle job. While Penn has had stretches of fantastic play in recent years with the Raiders, neither he nor Christian can really duplicate the effectiveness that Williams brings. That raises an important question: what exactly is Washington going to miss without Williams playing? No one would know that better than a longtime teammate like right tackle Morgan Moses. So, SB Nation watched film with Moses at training camp to get a better sense of why Williams is such a unique, explosive blocker.
