Bill Belichick has a very convincing case as the greatest coach in the history of pro football: as head coach, he has led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl wins (and counting) and also played a key role in two of the New York Giants’ titles as their defensive coordinator. The 67-year-old owns numerous NFL records, and five years after he decides to call it a career will receive a gold jacket as a first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee.
One of the records Belichick does not yet own, however, is total wins. That being said, he could come one step closer today against the Cleveland Browns and also join an elite club: the club’s former head coach — Belichick was with the original Browns franchise from 1991 until its relocation to Baltimore after the 1995 season — could become one of just three men in league history to achieve 300 combined regular season and playoff wins.
Currently at 299, Belichick could join long-time Chicago Bears head coach George Halas and Don Shula, formerly of the Baltimore Colts and Miami Dolphins, in the 300-club: Halas has won 324 games over the course of his stories career, Shula an all-time best 347. While Belichick is getting up there in age, besting Halas and even Shula does not seem impossible. First, of course, he would need to earn win No. 300.
