The Indianapolis Colts went into Sunday’s game on the back of a big division win having beaten the Houston Texans. The Colts came up against an elite defense this week but were still able to grind out a tough win against the Denver Broncos. There were plenty of strong showings during the 15-13 win, and a few poor ones, as well.
Here’s the stock report for week 8:
Stock Up: Ben Banogu
After Kemoko Turay broke his ankle and ended up on IR, the Colts needed someone to step up and help Justin Houston and Jabaal Sheard on the edge. Ben Banogu did just that on Sunday. He was a constant hassle off the edge and managed to produce a sack, a forced fumble, a pass deflection, and a tackle. Banogu saw a big spike in playing time this Sunday, seeing action on 36 of the defensive snaps, 49% in total. Banogu’s sack came at the end of the game in which he strip sacked Joe Flacco to ice the game. Hopefully this is the start of an upward trend for the rookie edge rusher.
Stock Down: Adam Vinatieri
Adam Vinatieri really had a very up and down game. He missed a first quarter field goal and also missed an extra point attempt, too. That’s four points that the Colts left on the field due to Vinatieri. In a tight competition like Sunday’s, when the Colts offense is already struggling, they cannot afford to leave points on the field. Vinatieri did somewhat redeem himself by nailing a 50 plus yard field goal to win the game.
Stock Up: Jack Doyle
Jack Doyle had the kind of game fans expect Doyle to have: a consistent one. Doyle was important on the offensive drives that were successful, creating separation and being open when Jacoby Brissett needed a target. Doyle finished his day with a stat line of 4 receptions for 61 yards, both were season highs.
Stock Down: Rock Ya-Sin
Rock Ya-Sin had a day to forget. With Pierre Desir inactive, Ya-Sin was asked to Shadow WR Courtland Sutton, who produced 3 catches for 72 yards. That didn’t really tell the full story, though. Ya-Sin was consistently beaten and was flagged five times, three times for defensive holding and twice for pass interference. He also managed to give up two big plays of 20 plus yards. I repeat, Rock Ya-Sin had a day to forget.
Stock Up: 4th Quarter 2 Minute Drive
The Colts took the field with the ball at the 11 yard line down 13-12 with 1:48 on the clock and no timeouts left. The play of the drive was Jacoby Brissett somehow escaping a safety sack by Von Miller, rolling out and finding T.Y. Hilton with a bullet right along the sideline at the 46 yard line. The drive consisted of 7 plays and took 1:26 off the clock and ended with a 51 yard field goal by Vinatieri to take the lead 15-13.
Stock Down: Offensive Line Pass Protection
The Colts went into the Broncos game having only allowed only 7 sacks in 7 weeks. The Colts hadn’t faced a defense as good as the Broncos one. It showed, as the Colts offensive line didn’t have a good showing in pass protection at all. The offensive line allowed 4 sacks, and Brissett faced consistent pressure from the Broncos defensive line. If not for Brissett’s escapability on the final drive, Von Miller would have sacked him for a safety and killed the Colts' chances of winning the game. The Colts offensive line needs to bounce back to their elite earlier play, and quickly.
