Cowboys Had Interest, But Couldn’t Land Adams - Nick Eatman, DallasCowboys.com
Talks heated up on Tuesday as the trade deadline approached, but in the end the Cowboys were unable to make a deal to acquire Jets star safety Jamal Adams.
Apparently, the Jets’ asking price was just too steep for the Cowboys, who traded away their 2019 first-round pick for Amari Cooper. Reportedly, New York was asking for multiple first-round picks.
But Adams would’ve been the marquee safety the Cowboys have been coveting for nearly two years. The team had talks with the Seahawks about landing Earl Thomas, who eventually signed with the Ravens last spring in free agency.
Adams, a Dallas native who starred at Hebron High School before going to LSU, was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft for the Jets. He made his first Pro Bowl in 2018 and was certainly a factor in the Jets’ lone victory this year, beating the Cowboys, 24-22. It was Adams who blitzed the middle of the line on the Cowboys’ final two-point conversion try, pressuring Dak Prescott into a quick throw that fell incomplete, which preserved New York’s win.

Given how the Cowboys were trying to pull off a deal for Jamal Adams all the way up until the deadline, it’s clear the Cowboys wanted the safety. However, it seems that the Jets simply wanted too much in return, according to reports.
According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, a source has revealed that the Cowboys actually offered a first-round selection to the Jets for Adams. And that Dallas was even willing to swap picks in other rounds to get the deal done right up to the final moments before the deadline passed.
The Cowboys traded their 2019 first-round selection to the Oakland Raiders last season for Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper. And that move saved their season. Clearly, Dallas was hoping to duplicate that success with a possible trade for Adams.
Ultimately a trade agreement could not be reached between the two teams. And according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Baltimore Ravens were also in talks with the Jets about acquiring Adams’ services.

The Cowboys’ pursuit and near-miss of Jamal Adams provided enough drama for a whole week, but the safety added to it afterwards by publicly stating that he had not asked for a trade before taking a shot at the Jets general manager for the way he handled things.

Cowboys are ‘locked back in’ following three losses, bye week - Todd Archer, ESPN
The Cowboys entered the bye week on somewhat of a high note after throttling their division rival, the Eagles, but there’s still a sour taste from their three-game losing streak. Over the break, though, the team took time to get back in the mindset that saw them jump out to a 3-0 start.
The Cowboys started the season with three convincing wins, and then they lost three consecutive games. Quarterback Dak Prescott indicated the Cowboys got ahead of themselves a little bit because of how well they started.
”We’re going to handle success the right way so that we don’t have to get to these points where our backs are against the wall,” Prescott said.
The Week 7 win against Philadelphia means nothing if the Cowboys lose to the Giants on Monday.
”We’ve talked about it in here,” guard Zack Martin said. “I don’t think we’re as good as we thought we were after those first three games. You never want to lose those games, but it was a wake-up call for us, and I think the guys are locked back in.”

Given the hot start that Dak Prescott has had to his 2019 season, many thought Dallas might use the bye week to hammer out a contract extension with him before he has a chance to further raise the price tag. That didn’t happen, and now former Cowboys lineman Nate Newton thinks the Cowboys have made a big mistake.
“[Stephen Jones] has ran into a man with the will that he has. This is why I try to tell everybody that will listen, y’all messed up -- and I’m talking about the people that don’t know Dak -- you messed up when you thought you were saying ‘we did you a favor by drafting you in the fourth round and giving you $750,000.’ Where you messed up at is you’ve got a man that knows how to handle his money and he could probably survive off $50,000. So everything he sees now is ‘what’s the benefit? What’s the long term?’
“He’s got goals. He’s got plans. Everybody says ‘he ought to be happy he’s got a soup commercial.’ Yeah, he is happy, because he earned that. He’s earned everything that he’s gotten and now, the same $750,000 that everybody thinks he should be doing flips about, this kid don’t care nothing about that. Because he’s saying ‘OK, I thought I was at $750,000, now I can get $40 mil? Oh, I can wait on that. Because I know how to live off this $100,000 and I’m willing to bet on me.’

Through all the drama circling around a potential trade, the Cowboys held a practice on Tuesday to try and get an early start on their next game. With several players dealing with injuries, Dallas got some good news from the practice.
The team took the field for what Cowboys coach Jason Garett referred to as a bonus practice on Tuesday, and most of their main injury concerns were on hand.
That includes Tyron Smith, La’el Collins, Amari Cooper, Robert Quinn and Leighton Vander Esch. The Cowboys’ offensive tackles had been battling ankle and knee injuries for much of the past month, while Cooper has been battling various leg ailments this year. All three played in the Eagles game before the bye week, and all three appear geared up for this game against the New York Giants.
Quinn and Vander Esch both sustained injuries in that win against the Eagles, but Garrett said Tuesday morning that both would be able to participate.
