Erik Magnuson brings versatility to Raiders interior OL, Will Compton brings depth at LB

In addition to signing Brandon Marshall, the Raiders added some back-end depth with a few under-the-radar signings

In the wake of Rodney Hudson’s injury on Sunday, the Raiders signed 25-year old Erik Magnuson off the Buffalo Bill’s practice squad to give the team some added depth in case Hudson remains out for an extended period.

Magnuson returns to the Bay Area, where he got his NFL start with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 after signing as an undrafted free agent. While the 6-foot-6, 300 pounds Magnuson played Tackle in college, he’s played all three interior offensive line positions in the NFL, bringing enough versatility to play all 5 OL spots in case of emergency.

Magnuson started in 3 games across 2017 and 2018 with the 49ers and was waived in July. He subsequently latched on with the Bills on Aug. 20 but was cut and signed to the practice squad as part of final roster cuts on Aug. 31.

Andre James did an admirable job filling in for Hudson once the heart of the Raider offensive line went down after just ten snaps against the Texans. James will almost certainly get the start, with Magnuson likely to remain on the roster only until Hudson comes back unless he really pops in practice.

There is no timetable available just yet on Hudson’s potential return, but his injury didn’t look very minor. While he won’t be placed on injured reserve, the fact that he couldn’t put any weight on his right leg on his way to the locker room seems inauspicious.

BIn addition to the Magnuson and signings, the Raiders added LB

In addition to the Magnuson and Brandon Marshall signings, the Raiders added Will Compton to the roster as they search for a semblance of depth at the linebacker position.

Compton started in 25 games for the Washington Redskins across the 2016 and 2017 seasons and most recently was with the Saints this offseason.
