Jalen Ramsey traded to Rams and may face Falcons this Sunday

The Rams just keep making big moves, this one in an effort to start shutting down elite receivers like Julio Jones.

I wasn’t real clear on why the Rams, who just lost Aqib Talib for an extended period of time, would trade away Marcus Peters for safety help. The answer to that question was revealed in short order, though, because the Rams just gave up a ton to get Jalen Ramsey.

The Jaguars had been in a holding pattern with Ramsey, who made it clear that he wanted out of Jacksonville because of disagreements with management. I just wasn’t sure a deal would actually get done, given that it’s very difficult to get value for a superstar cornerback.

The Jaguars found that value, though.

Two first round picks guarantee nothing, and the Rams figure to be good enough that they won’t be top ten picks in either year. The fourth is just a nice throw-in, but realistically the Jaguars are adding above average-to-great pieces, not someone the caliber of Ramsey. Hardly an ideal haul, in other words, but if the situation was irreparable it’s still a damn fine return.

The Rams, meanwhile, just keep going in. They’re down a 1st and 5th in 2020 and a 1st and 4th in 2021 now, with a roster that’s just going to get more expensive and still has real holes on it. It goes without saying that they have an enormous amount of talent on this team and that they’re in what they consider their Super Bowl window—they are—and Ramsey can only help them given the shakiness of their secondary. They’ll just have to hope they win with him, and the price winds up being a pittance.

For the Falcons, this can’t be considered good news. We can’t guarantee that Ramsey is going to play on Sunday given that he’s been dealing with back injuries and will just be joining his new team on Wednesday, but it would certainly improve the chances of the Rams stopping this high-flying Falcons passing attack. Yet more potential bad news for a season absurdly full of it.
