Patriots bring in three players for free agency workouts

New England is looking at some available players.

Despite already having suffered their fare share of injuries this season, the New England Patriots still have one of the deepest and most talented rosters in all of football. That being said, keeping the emergency lists updated is important which is why free agents regularly are brought in for workouts — you never know when you need to make a call, after all. On Tuesday, the team had three such players in town (via ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss).

Let’s take a look at them.

CB Brian Allen

After entering the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017, Brian Allen appeared in 17 total games over his first two years in the NFL. Playing exclusively on special teams, the Utah product saw extensive action on punt and kickoff coverage but failed to make the team this year: after seeing some defensive snaps during preseason, the 6-foot-3 defender was waived with an injury designation in August and later released off the Steelers’ injured reserve.

K Nick Rose

Nick Rose originally entered the NFL in 2016 as an undrafted rookie signing by the Atlanta Falcons. Over the three seasons that followed, the Texas product played for six different teams — including two stints with the Los Angeles Chargers, who signed him during the 2018 playoffs to serve as a kickoff specialist against the Patriots. Rose, who later joined the AAF but has been out of football since the league folded, is 11 of 14 (78.6%) on field goal attempts in the NFL and 23 of 26 (88.5%) on extra points.

DT Eddie Vanderdoes

A former third-round draft pick by the Oakland Raiders, Eddie Vanderdoes has struggled with injuries over his first two-plus years in the NFL. He appeared in all 16 games during his 2017 rookie campaign and finished the season with 12 quarterback pressures, but tore his ACL in the regular season finale. As a result of the injury, Vanderdoes had to spend all of 2018 on the physically unable to perform list before getting placed on injured reserve again this season. The Raiders released him off their IR last week.
