The 5 O’Clock Club: The colors and logos of the Washington Redskins

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere…

The 5 o’clock club is published several times per week during the season, and aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.

I thought we might enjoy a brief interlude away from all the drama of coach firings, silent owners and bumbling team presidents today.

As I surfed the internet last week in search of something else, I came across the image below of Redskins helmets through the years. The first two are fairly simple from the early years of the NFL, but the 1956 helmet is one that I had never seen before, with a white feather and a red tip painted up the back of the helmet. This helmet was used for about a decade until it was replace with the spear helmet that I associate with the Billy & Sonny era.

The R-in-a-circle logo is the one I like the least, and it was pretty short-lived.

As we know, Vince Lombardi retired from the championship Green Bay Packers and then became Head Coach and part owner of the Washington Redskins in 1969. One of the things Lombardi did besides make the Redskins a winning team his first year was to change the Redskins helmet design from a spear to an “R.” In Green Bay, the Packers had a simple “G” on their helmet so Lombardi put his mark on the Redskins with the “R” as part of the new look, winning Washington Redskins.

Unfortunately, Vince Lombardi had cancer and passed away in 1970. In 1971, the Washington Redskins hired successful Los Angeles Rams Head Coach George Allen, Jr. In an effort to make his mark on the Redskins immediately and not liking the Lombardi “R” on the helmets, George Allen instituted a change. With the help of Native American chiefs and their approval, the current Redskins logo design on the helmets was created.

Here’s a look at some uniform combinations that the ‘Skins have worn in recent and not-so-recent years:

Burgundy over gold — 1933 home uniform

All-Burgundy

All-White

1970s throwback

NFL 70th anniversary throwback

The aborted “color rush” uniform

The Redskins wore all-burgundy in their only “color rush” game in lieu of the all-gold the league had chosen for them.
