Report: Dak Prescott has come down to “33, 35ish” in terms of annual value for upcoming contract

Movement in contract talks with Dak Prescott, or just more of the same?

It’s been a long time since we talked about Dak Prescott’s contract, the fact that actual football games have been happening has distracted us from that issue quite nicely.

Still, the Dallas Cowboys have yet to iron out a long-term contract extension with their franchise quarterback and that’s a little troubling considering he’s technically a free agent after this season. Dak has played like an MVP at times this season, but along with the rest of the team, he’s had his share of struggles.

We heard that Prescott turned down an offer for $30M per year and that he reportedly asked for $40M. We haven’t heard much about Dak’s contract demands since, but an interesting nugget did pop up on Wednesday.

NFL Network’s Jane Slater recently started a podcast (The ‘Boys And Girl Podcast) and on the latest episode gave us a little bit more information on exactly where negotiations might be at the moment.

“Since then I’ve been told that he’s come down. The number is closer to 33, 35 ish. But for whatever reason they’re still not able to get this deal done.”

This number makes much more sense considering the price tags of fellow 2016 quarterbacks Jared Goff ($33.5M per year) and Carson Wentz ($32M). It never made sense that Dak would ultimately get $40M, but the way you “settle” on something like “35ish” is by asking for it in the first place.

It feels unlikely that we see the Cowboys put this deal together before the season ends. It feels like we’ll get through Thanksgiving, Christmas, the playoffs, and the Super Bowl before Dak has his deal.

More waiting.
