NFL Week 7 upset picks: How the Eagles can beat the Cowboys - ESPN+
Sunday night’s game is the biggest of the season so far when it comes to playoff leverage. In the weekly Football Outsiders playoff simulation, the Eagles make the postseason 79% of the time when they win this game but only 41% of the time if they lose. The Cowboys make the postseason 63% of the time in simulations where they win this game but only 25% of the time if they lose. ESPN’s Football Power Index simulations show a similar result. [...] Injuries make it hard to determine who will win the matchup between the Eagles’ defensive front and the Cowboys’ offensive line. The Cowboys are first in the lowest pressure rate allowed on offense (16.9%), according to ESPN Stats & Information research, and they should be getting back both of their starting tackles (Tyron Smith and La’el Collins) from injury. But we don’t know if those tackles will be playing at 100 percent effectiveness at this point in their recovery. The Cowboys will have to face an Eagles defense that is fifth in pressure rate on defense (31.6%). Brandon Graham has 20 hurries, according to Sports Info Solutions data, while Fletcher Cox has 13 even though he has yet to record a sack.

Game Preview – PHI at DAL - Iggles Blitz
The Eagles DL is the key to the game. They need to play well against the run, which is the foundation of the Dallas offense. That means getting penetration and disrupting Zeke Elliott in the backfield. The DL needs to eat up blockers when they can, to help the LBs make plays. The DL must get pressure on Dak. That means attacking up the field, but also staying under control. If you get behind him, he’ll take off and run. Derek Barnett must play smart. He can’t chase run plays away from him. He needs to play the bootleg and then chase. Fletcher Cox has been getting better each week. This would be a great time for him to have a breakout game.

What to watch for: Can the Cowboys get off to a fast start? In their three-game losing streak, they have been outscored 47-9 in the first half. In their past two games, they have trailed by 28 and 18 points. To make a comeback under those circumstances, things have to go perfectly. They haven’t.

Fletcher Cox still doesn’t have a sack. It’s only the second time in his career that he’s failed to register at least one sack in the first six games. The other time was in 2014. He didn’t get his first sack that year until the ninth game, and finished with only four, the second fewest of his career. Cox has just four quarterback hits. Through six games last year, Cox had 3 ½ sacks and 11 QB hits. Cox is second on the team in quarterback pressures with 24 (0 sacks, 4 hits, 24 hurries). Graham has a team-high 27 (4-5-27), according to Pro Football Focus. The only other defensive player with double-digit pressures is Derek Barnett, who has 20 (2-5-13). Through six games last year, the Eagles had five players with 15 or more quarterback pressure,s four of whom had 24 or more.

I see this game coming down to Cooper’s availability. If he’s on the field, I think the Cowboys can better attack the Eagles deep, where they’re vulnerable. If he’s not on the field, I’d be confident the Eagles run defense can hold up, even against Elliott, although I am curious how the changes at linebacker will affect the defense Sunday. I’m less concerned with the Eagles offense. I think they can move the ball on the Cowboys and Pederson will be creative with schemes to get players open. And I like Wentz’s chances for a productive game, too. Pay attention to third downs; the Cowboys have the second-best third-down defense. But it sounds as if Cooper is playing, so I’ll take the Cowboys at this point. I don’t make this pick with much conviction, though, because of the injury uncertainties. And I don’t think either team will be buried with a loss, either. If I had to guess, I’d predict these teams will be playing for first place in the NFC East again on Dec. 22. With Jalen Mills returning, though, Philly isn’t getting a huge boost. Last year, Mills allowed a 63.9% completion rate, with roughly a third of the yards he surrendered coming after the catch. Opposing quarterbacks averaged 12.6 yards per target against him and had a stellar 109.7 passer rating when targeting him. Darby allowed just a 61% completion rate, though that number ballooned to 65% in the three games he played in this season. Regardless, Darby is the team’s top corner and they’ll need him to go up against a passing attack that ranks third in the league.

Consider these names: Paul Worrilow, Malik Jackson, DeSean Jackson, Vinny Curry, Zach Brown, Blake Countess, Orlando Scandrick, Cody Kessler, Johnathan Cyprien, Charles Johnson, Andre Sendejo and L.J. Fort. Along with Wisniewski, Jernigan and Darby. Brown, Countess, Kessler, Cyprien, Johnson, Fort, Worrilow and Wisniewski are gone. Scandrick was released, then brought back out of necessity. Malik Jackson, DeSean Jackson, Darby and Jernigan have all been hurt. Curry and Sendejo are here but haven’t exactly made a big impact. Jordan Howard has been fine and Hassan Ridgeway is eating up a lot of snaps at defensive tackle with Jernigan and Malik Jackson out. You can’t totally blame the front office for injuries, but when you rely on a 32-year-old as your speed receiver and he gets hurt, or when you rely on oft-injured guys like Darby and Jernigan and they get hurt, it shouldn’t be a surprise. Some of these failed moves didn’t cost the Eagles a penny. Most of them did.

Speaking of expensive running backs with unfavorable matchups, look no further than the second-most expensive running back available this week in Ezekiel Elliott of the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys are hosting their NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles this week in Jerry’s World, but the Eagles have been notoriously bad against the pass (Kirk Cousins just threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns against them, remember?). This means the Dallas offense will likely flow through the arm of Dak Prescott as opposed to the legs of Zeke Elliott.

Corey Nelson goes from starter to inactive in three weeks. Nelson has had a turbulent second stint with the Broncos so far. After signing in Denver seven days before kickoff against the Raiders, the former Sooner found his way into the starting lineup in Oakland. It was never really fair to expect him to adequetly fill in for the injured Todd Davis on such short notice, but he did what he could. After Leonard Fournette’s 225-yards rushing day, Nelson was yanked in favor of Alexander Johnson. The 250-pound dinosaur has flourished since, so much that even Josey Jewell played 0 defensive snaps last week. With all of the linebackers healthy, it now makes sense for Nelson to sit out.

With the news of the Tennessee Titans benching quarterback Marcus Mariota, it’s clear his time in Nashville is coming to an end after this season. While Mariota did lead the Titans to two playoff appearances in his first four seasons, his tenure in Tennessee will go down as a disappointment for the second pick in the 2015 draft. We all have players we personally root for, either because they play for your favorite team, have a story that’s worth celebrating, or they attended your alma mater. For Mariota, the last two were the reasons I was rooting for him success. He was the first Heisman winner in Oregon football history, and he took the program to heights we hadn’t seen before. He was soft-spoken, but a baller on the field. And then also, by every account, he’s just a fantastic kid. Family man, respectful, and an excellent leader off the field. But why did Mariota not live up to his draft slot? I’ll dive into a few reasons why and also what I think happens next for him.
